[01] German envoy - Press Conference

Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) -- German envoy for Cyprus, Detlev Graf zu Rantzau, said here today that the G8 initiative on Cyprus presents the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides with two options, either partition or an acceptable solution to all.

He said the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides should accept to have "all issues on the negotiating table," in the anticipated talks, UN Secretary- General is due to call in October, following a recommendation by the group of the seven most industrialised nations plus Russia adopted at their Cologne summit last month.

Rantzau said President Glafcos Clerides is ready to discuss all issues "in parallel and simultaneously" whereas Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash insists on having his own status recognised, as the so-called leader of the self-styled regime in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus, before accepting an invitation to talks.

Speaking at a press conference, at the end of his round of talks on both sides of the divide, he indicated that "perhaps Denktash has left the door open to proximity talks", since he (Denktash) appears ready to meet the UN Secretary-General for talks separately.

"I think what the G8 are trying is to present the two alternatives, either let things stand as they are, which is in practical terms partition, or attempt to find a solution acceptable to all," he told journalists.

Outlining his own impression of his discussions here, Rantzau said President Clerides expressed his readiness to discuss a number of core issues, six or seven, in parallel and simultaneously.

"Serious negotiations must include all issues and it is very important for the protagonists here to agree on issues they will discuss," Rantzau said.

Replying to questions, he said the Cyprus government has indicated that it sees a three-track route, comprising the proposed negotiations, a Greco-Turkish dialogue which started in New York this week with a meeting of Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey, and the possibility of improved relations between the European Union and Turkey.

Commenting on the content of the two most recent UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus, Rantzau said it is virtually impossible to change the wording of resolutions on the renewal of UNFICYP's mandate (United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus) but acknowledged it is easier to have a new resolution "not bound by earlier ones and using the language of the day."

[02] France - UN Cyprus resolutions

Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) -- A French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said that her country hopes that the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides "will respond positively to the invitation of the Security Council and the UN Secretary-General" for the resumption of talks on the Cyprus problem.

In a statement issued yesterday, the spokeswoman said that in its recently adopted resolutions, the UN Security Council urges the two sides on the island to resume "talks without preconditions, on the basis of the UN resolutions".

She also said that "France reminds that the basis for a settlement exists and is known", and that is "a bizonal and bicommunal federation".

"It is up to the sides to take their responsibilities," she added.

    [03] Russia - UN resolutions

Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) -- The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that the opportunity given by the UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus and the G8 initiative should not be missed.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Ministry said that the UN resolutions "reaffirm the basic principles of a Cyprus settlement".

It said that the recently approved resolutions "provide for the respect of the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, the establishment on the island of a bicommunal and bizonal federation, with a single sovereignty and international identity".

It furthermore stated that the resolutions, coupled with the G8 initiative for the resumption of stalled peace talks, provide an opportunity to break the deadlock.

"Seizing this opportunity, of course, will be difficult, but we hope that the chance will not be allowed to be missed," the statement concluded.

    [04] Exhumation - War dead

Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) --The process of exhumations of remains of 1974 war dead at Lakatamia Military Cemetery is drawing to a close and experts from the international organisation "Physicians for Human Rights" have already started preliminary work at the Saint Constantinos and Eleni Cemetery in Nicosia.

Remains of Greek Cypriot and Greek war dead of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, which were unearthed from Lakatamia cemetery, are being examined by scientists, representing various fields including anthropologists, X-ray experts and pathologists, at a specially set up scientific laboratory.

The purpose of the examination is to obtain bone samples for the purpose of DNA examination, to be undertaken by the Institute of Genetics and Neurology.

Professor William Haglund, who leads the team of experts, comprising 27 scientists from more than ten countries, estimates that the task of exhumation will be completed around mid July.

Experts will continue their work at the scientific laboratory, in Nicosia.

The exhumations are taking place following a decision by the government of Cyprus to try and identify the remains of those buried in these two cemeteries, whose identity was not established at the time of their burial.

    [06] Cyprus - Miss Universe

Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus will host the Miss Universe contest for the year 2000.

The decision was sealed two days ago when Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nikos Rolandis signed a contract with Miss Universe Corporation.

The Miss Universe contest is the third most popular televised event worldwide, after the Olympic Games and the World Cup.

It is estimated that some 2,4 billion viewers will watch the contest. The 85 contestants from an equal number of countries are expected to visit Cyprus for a period of three weeks.

Miss Universe 2000 will be awarded the Golden Apple prize, reviving mythology according to which Aphrodite received the same prize 2800 years ago.

Celebrities and hundreds of tourist agents from abroad will be invited to attend the event.
