[01] Cyprus - US navy ship

Nicosia, Aug 10 (CNA) -- The US Navy Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer "USS Ramage" will be visiting the port of Limassol from tomorrow and until August 16, to allow the 293 crew members to go on shore leave.

The 154-metre vessel, displacing 9000 tons, set sail from Norfolk, Virginia, on May 24 and since then the crew have trained, exercised and performed various missions with other US Sixth Fleet assets.

According to a US embassy press release the ship will not be open for public visits during its stay in the southern coastal port of Limassol.

[02] Cyprus - Suspension of ambassador to Egypt

Nicosia, Aug 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus' ambassador to Egypt Charalambos Kapsos was suspended for three months today following allegations including that he held a "bouzouki night" charging an entrance fee and importing dozens of cases of wine into the country.

An official announcement said the Public Service Commission, responsible for hiring civil servants, took the decision "following a proposal by the Foreign Minister".

It added that Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides based his proposal on the initial findings of the investigating officers from his ministry and the auditor general's office that are in Cairo since Sunday.

The allegations against the ambassador were carried in "Politis" daily newspaper last week, prompting Kasoulides to recall the ambassador and order an inquiry.

Foreign Ministry permanent secretary Andreas Pirishis and Costakis Palatos of the auditor general's office are carrying out the investigation.

Kapsos himself has denied the accusations in letters to the press. In a letter published in "Politis" today, the ambassador criticises the media for the way it handled the case and says the press has been misled by persons he does not name.

In a previous letter, Kapsos denied there was a 60 US dollar entrance fee for the bouzouki night as well as allegations that Romanian dancers were present.

As for the 372 cartons of wine he is reported to have taken to Cairo, Kapsos says they were to be used in the long-term.

He says some bottles of wine have been used for Cyprus nights while the rest are stored at his residence.

[03] UNFICYP - Greek Cypriot man - Illegal court

Nicosia, Aug 02 (CNA) -- Greek Cypriot Rogiros Georgiou, 48, who has been illegally held by the Turkish occupation regime since July 21 was led today before an illegal court in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus.

Georgiou, a Canadian citizen, will be taken before the illegal court again tomorrow.

UN peace-keeping force (UNFICYP) Spokeswoman Sarah Russell told CNA that an UNFICYP police officer, a representative from the Canadian High Commission in Damascus and Rogiros' brother, Dafnis, were present.

According to Russell the illegal court "adjourned this afternoon and will resume again tomorrow".

The regime in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since its troops invaded the island in 1974 is recognised only by Ankara, while UN resolutions call on all states not to recognise or facilitate it in any way.

Asked about Georgiou's health, Russell said he has not asked to be examined by a doctor and recalled that an UNFICYP doctor examined him last week and found him to be in good health.

"We had said that if he wishes to see a doctor again at any time we will take a doctor but we have not received a request from him," Russell said.
