    [01] President - Parade - Nikiforos '99

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides said at the end of a military parade the country's armed forces have been upgraded a great deal since last year and the people of Cyprus should feel very safe indeed.

    The President also said this year's parade was carried out according to plan and was not in any way affected by any Turkish threats.

    [02] Human Rights seminar - Council of Europe

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- Distinguished personalities in the field of human rights will be in Cyprus next week to attend a seminar to mark 50 years since the establishment of the Council of Europe, which will focus on achievements and Prospects in the field of human rights.

    President Glafcos Clerides is scheduled to open the one-day meeting on October 16, which is organised by the International Association for the Protection of Human Rights of the Council of Europe and the Directorate of Human Rights of the Council.

    [03] Cyprus - UN protest - Turkish violations

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus has protested repeated violations of its air space in September, pointing out that these actions occur at a time when the international community expects a different behaviour from Turkey.

    A written protest by Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Sotos Zakheos said these new provocations by Turkey show once again that this country displays a flagrant disregard to international law, the UN Charter and the relevant UN resolutions on Cyprus.

    [04] Spokesman - European Parliament - Resolution

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- The government has welcomed a resolution adopted Wednesday by majority vote in the European Parliament urging Turkey to establish full democracy and respect human rights.

    "The government believes it is very important that the resolution points out that Turkey must meet its obligations to allow relations with the European Union to improve," Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    [05] House - New session

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- The House of Representatives met today for the first time after the summer recess. During the session, three new deputies were sworn in to replace one who resigned and two who were appointed to the cabinet.

    In his remarks to the plenary, House President Spyros Kyprianou said it must be pointed out to Turkey that it should relinquish its expansionist designs and stressed that Cyprus has nothing more to give since it has long reached the limits of national and natural survival.

    [06] Cyprus - Council of Europe - Ambassador

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe Ambassador Christoforos Yiangou presented his credentials to the Council's Secretary General Walter Schwimmer.

    Ambassador Yiangou briefed Schwimmer on the latest developments in the Cyprus question and exchanged views on relations between the Republic and the Council as well as ways to further enhance them.
