    [01] EU applicant countries - Vassiliou

    Nicosia, Oct 12 (CNA) -- The prospects of further European Union enlargement in view of the upcoming summit of the European Council to be held in Helsinki, Finland, were discussed by the six applicants for accession included in the first wave of enlargement, at their meeting in Tallinn Estonia.

    In their conclusions the six said he EU should make every effort to see that the criteria agreed in Cologne and Berlin on EU enlargement are observed, and expressed their support to further enlargement of the Union and the start of negotiations with the second group of applicant countries.

    Speaking at a joint press conference Chief negotiator for Cyprus in talks for accession to the EU, George Vassiliou, said the timetable set for the first wave of enlargement by the year 2002 should be kept.

    The conclusions of the meeting, which was at ministerial level and presided over by Estonian Foreign Minister, Toomas Ilves, will be sent to EU Commissioner Romano Prodi.

    The Foreign Ministers of the first six candidate countries for accession agreed to meet again in April or May 2000 in Slovenia.

    The first wave of enlargement includes Cyprus, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovenia and the second wave, Malta, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia, Bulgaria and Romania.

    [02] President Clerides - World War II Veterans

    Nicosia, Oct 12 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Veterans' Association today awarded President Glafcos Clerides with a silver medal for his services in the British Royal Air Force during World War II and assured him they are by his side in Cyprus' struggle for freedom and justice.

    The President, visibly touched by this encounter, told his comrades-in- arms that today Cyprus is fighting for the same values, principles and ideals that they had struggled for fifty years ago.

    [03] German Ambassador - Departure

    Nicosia, Oct 12 (CNA) -- German Ambassador to Cyprus Marie-Gabriele von Malsen-Tilborch today called on President Glafcos Clerides to bid him farewell.

    The outgoing Ambassador took up her post in Cyprus in September 1997 and is expected to leave the island soon.

    No statements were made after the meeting.
