    [01] IUF General Secretary - Rights of workers

    Nicosia, Oct 26 (CNA) -- General Secretary of the International Union of Federations of Food, Agriculture, Hotels, Restaurants, Catering and Allied Works (IUF), Ron Oswald, said today that "defending the rights of workers in the tourist industry and the creation of trade unions is a priority for the IUF".

    Speaking to the press, after the two-day annual conference of the Trade Group Board of the Hotel, Restaurant, Catering and Tourism Sectoral Council (HRCT), affiliated to the IUF, Oswald said that "this industry depends very much on workers" and that "customer satisfaction in tourism depends on the service they get".

    [02] President Clerides - Egyptian ambassador - Credentials

    Nicosia, Oct 26 (CNA) -- New Egyptian Ambassador to Cyprus, Omar Metwally Mohamed Metwally, expressed today the hope for a successful outcome of the current efforts by the UN Secretary General and the international community for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Receiving the credentials President Glafcos Clerides said the government wishes the peace effort to succeed but would not allow the UN- led process "to degenerate into mockery" and is "not prepared to enter another round of negotiations for the sake of deliberating".

    [03] President - Rwandan Ambassador - Credentials

    Nicosia, Oct 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus expects the international community to "exert the necessary pressure" on Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership to show the necessary will to negotiate for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, President Glafcos Clerides said, accepting the credentials of the new Ambassador of Rwanda Gerald Zirimwabagabo.

    The Ambassador said he would work towards the completion of a bilateral cooperation agreement to boost relations and said his country is set to benefit from Cyprus' experience in many sectors, including tourism and banking.

    [04] EDEK - 30th anniversary

    Nicosia, Oct 26 (CNA) -- Socialist Party EDEK is celebrating this month thirty years of struggles to promote national, social and economic issues that are in line with its ideology.

    Speaking at a press conference today, EDEK President and founder Vasos Lyssarides said his party "has written a very proud history" and it "sees the need to expand with new comrades".

    [05] Immigration chief - Remand order

    Nicosia, Oct 26 (CNA) -- The Nicosia District Court today issued a six day remand order against the chief of the Immigration Department Christodoulos Nicolaides, who was taken from the hospital to a police detention center after his doctors said he is no longer in a critical condition.

    Nicolaides was remanded in custody on suspicion of illegal supply of temporary residence and work permits to foreigners.

    [06] Finance Minister - Libyan Justice Minister

    Nicosia, Oct 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Libya expressed today their determination to work towards strengthening bilateral cooperation especially in the economic and trade fields at a meeting here between Finance Minister Takis Klerides and Libyan Justice and Law and Order Minister Mohamed Belgasem El Zwei.

    The Libyan Minister, who arrived earlier today heading an eight-member delegation, will also have meetings with his counterpart Nicos Koshis and Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis.
