    [02] Stock Exchange - Y2K

    Nicosia, Jan 4 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) has not been hit by the millennium computer bug, but only by a 2,09-per-cent fall in share prices.

    The CSE General Index today closed at 699,07 compared to 713,9 on Thursday, last working day of 1999.

    CSE General Manager Nondas Metaxas told the press that today, first working day of the new year that the CSE electronic systems operated "with no problems at all", explaining that this has been the result of "a lot of work since October".

    [03] Greek FM - Visit

    Nicosia, Jan 4 (CNA) -- George Papandreou, Greece's Foreign Minister, will be in Cyprus next week for a series of meetings with the government and the island's political leadership, Panayiotis Beglitis, spokesman for the Greek Foreign Ministry, told CNA today.

    During his talks here, Papandreou will review the outcome of the first round of UN-sponsored proximity talks in December last year and the conclusions of the European Union summit in Helsinki, he said.

    [04] National Council - Spokesman

    Nicosia, Jan 4 (CNA) -- A four-hour long meeting of the island's political leadership on the latest developments in Cyprus took place in a "spirit of unity" in spite of different views expressed during the meeting, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    He said the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus question, will probably meet again before the start of the second round of UN-sponsored proximity talks in late January.

    [05] Cyprus - Britain - Nuclear weapons

    London, Jan 4 (CNA) -- A spokesman for the British Ministry of Defence told CNA today there are no nuclear weapons in the British Bases in Cyprus now.

    He also said aircraft using the Bases do not carry nuclear weapons.

    [06] Government - Denktash - Turkish Cypriot daily

    Nicosia, Jan 4 (CNA) -- The government condemned today a huge fine imposed on a Turkish Cypriot daily by a self-styled court in Turkish occupied Cyprus for alleged defamation of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    The government described the "court" decision as an affront to freedom of speech and called on the international community to react to attempts by the occupation regime to put a muzzle on dissenting voices.

    [07] Cyprus FM - Israeli President

    Nicosia, Jan 4 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Israeli President Ezer Weizman discussed today recent developments in the Cyprus problem and the peace process in the Middle East.

    Kasoulides is visiting Israel at the invitation of Jerusalem Patriarch Diodoros A' for Christmas 2000 celebrations.
