    [01] UN-Proximity talks - Second round begins

    Geneva, Jan 31 (CNA) - The second round of UN-led proximity talks begin today with separate meetings of President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash with the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and his Special Adviser for Cyprus A lvaro de Soto.

    The UN chief will meet Clerides at 0930 local time and Denktash at 1230. Both meetings will take place at UN Headquarters in Geneva. Meanwhile, US high ranking officials seem encouraged and have expressed satisfaction that the protagonists of the talks are both back on stage and ready to continue the proximity talks.

    Geneva, Jan 31 (CNA) - UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan today went into detail on the core aspects of the Cyprus problem in an hour-long meeting here today with President Glafcos Clerides, with which a second round of proximity talks got underway.

    Annan and his special advisor for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto are now meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, to go into depth on the issues discussed in the first round of proximity talks that took place in New York in December. MM/MCH/MA/GP/2000

    [03] Accident - Six dead

    Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) - Six people were killed and 27 were injured when a minibus crashed into a cement protective wall at a steep curve on the Platres-Moniatis road.

    The accident occured yesterday afternoon, as the bus with 35 passengers on board from the Philippines and Sri Lanka was returning from a day-trip to Troodos mountains. The passengers, in their majority women are employed in Larnaca as housekeepers. Among the dead are four women, a man and a three-year old boy of a Cypriot father and a Philippino mother.
