    [01] Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders meet

    Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) -- Leaders or representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties met today at the Ledra Palace Hotel in the UN-controlled buffer zone in Nicosia.

    A joint communique issued afterwards says "participants expressed views on the course of developments in the Cyprus problem".

    [03] Israeli Agriculture Minister - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) - Israeli Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Haim Oron arrives here tomorrow on an official two-day visit at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart Costas Themistocleous.

    The two ministers will discuss ways to further strengthen cooperation between Cyprus and Israel in the agricultural field.

    [04] Government - Confidence building measures

    Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) - The Cyprus government has said it would be willing to discuss confidence building measures on the island as long as they did not constitute in any way recognition of the illegal regime in the Turkish occupied areas and are not a substitute for negotiations leading to an overall settlement.

    Replying to questions during his daily briefing today, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said no concrete measures have been proposed to the government.

    [05] Cyprus - Oil - Price rise

    Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) - The price of oil products will increase by a maximum of five cents per litre, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis said today, after a meeting he chaired on the issue.

    Rolandis said the increase in the price of oil, today selling at 27 dollars per barrel, is inevitable.

    [06] EU - Cyprus - UN - Death penalty

    Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) - Portugal, the current European Union presidency, has issued a statement welcoming the decision by the Republic of Cyprus to abolish the death penalty.

    The EU statement, which has circulated at the UN and was made public here today, describes Cyprus' ratification of Protocol 6 of the European Convention of Human Rights as "a significant step forward, reinforcing Cyprus' commitment to the promotion of human rights."

    [07] Desalination - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) - Work for the construction of a second desalination plant in Cyprus started at the beginning of this year and is expected to provide two tonnes of fresh water in April next year.

    According to an official statement, the unit, built near Larnaca international airport on the southern coast, will supply the capital Nicosia and the southern coastal town of Larnaca with fresh water. CNA/GG/MM/2000

    [08] House President - Health

    London, Feb 14 (CNA) - House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou was said to be in "good spirits" and making steady and satisfactory progress after an operation he underwent on Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital in London on his sternum.

    Speaking to the press, heart surgeon Rex Stambridge said the House President "is in a slight better spirit today, he is mobilizing better and is making steady and satisfactory progress".
