    [02] Louvre - Aphrodite - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Feb 20 (CNA) - Cyprus is to get a life-size replica of the famous statue of the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite of Milos, for the Miss Universe pageant, to take place here in May. A request to the authorities of the museum by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis to send to Cyprus the actual statue has been turned down, on the grounds that the statue should not be moved again from its place, not even within the museum itself.     Nicosia, Feb 20 (CNA) - British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook has said a solution in Cyprus would help the Republic's bid to join the European Union but this should not be a precondition for accession. He also said membership talks with Turkey, also a candidate country, cannot start until the Copenhagen criteria are met.

    [04] Socialdemocratic movement - Inaugural conference

    Nicosia, Feb 20 (CNA) - Moves to form Cyprus' socialdemocratic party got underway on Saturday with the first meeting of members from the socialist party EDEK and others, who pledged to take the new party forward to achieve a more active participation in European affairs. As EDEK leader Vassos Lyssarides announced his decision to hand over the leadership, there were many calls for him to stay at the helm of the new movement and pledges from speakers to put the solution of the Cyprus question at the top of their list of priorities and move Cyprus closer to Europe.
