    [01] Weather forecast fro Cyprus

    Nicosia, Mar 16 (CNA) -- The weather on Friday will be fair at first but it will gradually become cloudy with showers later in the evening.

    On Saturday the weather will be unsettled with rain and local thunderstorms. The winds will be fresh to strong southwesterly and the sea will be moderate.

    On Friday temperatures will range from 5 to 21 inland and from 8 to 21 on the coast. On Saturday temperatures will range from 3 to 16 inland and from 5 to 18 on the coast.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: On Sunday the weather will continue unsettled but on Monday the weather will gradually become fair. Temperatures will decrease slightly.

    [02] Alpha Bank Cyprus - Results

    Nicosia, Mar 16 (CNA)-- Customer deposits of Alpha Bank based in Cyprus increased by 82% during 1999 compared to 1998.

    According to the bank, financial results for 1999, first year of operation of the Greek bank in Cyprus as a member of the Alpha Credit Bank Group, customer deposits increased by 237 million Cyprus pounds to reach 525 million pounds (One Cyprus pound equals approx. 1.7 US dollars).     [03] President Clerides - France

    Nicosia, Mar 16 (CNA) -- France has expressed its support for the UN-led process of peace talks on Cyprus, saying that it wishes to see a settlement of the Cyprus question and displaying trust in the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

    Paris has also expressed its support for Cyprus/ bid to join the European Union, saying that when it assumes the six-monthly rotating EU presidency it intends to undertake an initiative for progress on this score.

    [04] UN soldier - Dead - Named

    Nicosia, Mar 16 (CNA) -- The UN have named the British peace-keeper found dead on Wednesday at his observation post in the UN-controlled buffer zone in Nicosia.

    He is private Lee Joseph Harrison, 20, from the West Midlands, UNFICYP spokesman Charles Gaulkin told CNA today, noting that the exact circumstances of his death have not yet been established.

    [05] EU Commissioner - Visit

    Nicosia, Mar 16 (CNA)-- The top European Union Commissioner on enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, will be in Cyprus next week for contacts with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides.

    The EU official arrives early Thursday afternoon (23 March) and later on will have talks with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides. In the evening he will give a lecture on EU enlargement and the vision of the EU in the 21st century.
