    [02] Greek Foreign Minister - British envoy

    Athens, May 9 (CNA) - British government envoy for Cyprus Sir David Hannay has said there is a historic opportunity today to settle the Cyprus question and added that all core issues should be addressed in the new effort to reach a settlement on the island, divided since Turkish troops occupied 37 percent of its territory in 1974.

    Hannay was speaking after a meeting in Greece with Foreign Minister George Papandreou, who said that Athens and London have decided to cooperate closely to promote a settlement in Cyprus in view of the proximity talks which opened last year.

    [03] President Clerides - British Deputy High Commissioner

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- British Deputy High Commissioner to Cyprus John Buck conveyed today to President Glafcos Clerides the best wishes of British Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary for a speedy recovery after an operation the President had last week to remove a polyp from his large intestine.

    Replying to questions, Buck refrained from saying when British representative for Cyprus Sir David Hannay would be visiting the island, expressing, however, certainty that "Sir David would like to reschedule his visit in due course but only when it is clear that the President is fully fit".

    [04] Former President - Health - Surgery

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- The government will not replace Head of Cyprus' team in negotiations for accession to the European Union, George Vassiliou who leaves urgently for London later today where tomorrow to undergo surgery to remove a benign tumour in the brain.

    Vassiliou will be operated on at the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery in London possibly tomorrow and is expected to resume his duties in about six weeks. The former President expressed certainty he will overcome this trying period and will return stronger to continue working towards the island's accession to the EU.

    [06] Miss Universe 2000 - Miss Chinese Taipei

    By Demetra Molyvas Nicosia, ̀ay 9 (CNA) -- "Miss Taiwan" has been renamed Miss Chinese Taipei in order to take part in the Miss Universe 2000 pageant to be held in Cyprus, official sources said.

    Following complaints from China, Cyprus looked to see what was internationally accepted for Taiwan, deemed by China since 1945 a breakaway province.

    [07] President Clerides - Messages

    Nicosia, May 9. (CNA) - As President Glafcos Clerides resumed his duties today at the private clinic where he is recuperating after an operation to remove a polyp from the large intestine, messages are continuing to arrive wishing him a speedy recovery.

    Israeli President Ezer Weizman, Archibishop of Thyateira and Great Britain Gregorios and US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus Alfred Moses are among officials who have sent the Cyprus President messages.
