    [01] Canada - Cyprus - Petition

    Nicosia, Jul 24 (CNA) -- Cypriots and Greeks living in Canada called upon their government to support the plea of the Cypriot people for implementation of UN resolutions on Cyprus and to refarin from efforts towards the sale of CANDU reactors to Turkey.

    In a petition on the occassion of 26 years since the Turkish invasion and occupation of 37 per cent of Cyprus, Canandian representatives of the constituent organisations of the Hellenic Canadian Solidarity Committee for Cyprus and the Cypriot Community of Montreal asked their government and all peace-loving nations to support the just demands of the Cypriot people.

    Nicosia, Jul 24 (CNA) -- According to the Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport, the weather forecast for Cyprus is:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 25/7/2000 to 26/7/2000

    The weather mainly fine. The winds virable light atnight, moderate sea breezes in the afternnon and the temperature maximum inland 40-42C and minimum 24-26C inland and maximum on coasts 34-36C(max)and minimum 22-24C.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 27/7/2000 to 28/7/2000

    Weather continuing fine and hot with temperature remaining 3 to 4 degrees above seasonal normal.

    [03] Proximity talks - Alvaro de Soto

    by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Jul 24 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto expressed here today the hope that the current process of proximity talks between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities would lead to the direction of "give and take" negotiations, refraining, however, from giving any further details.

    Responding to questions shortly before his first meeting here with President Glafcos Clerides, de Soto said he was going to hear reactions from the two sides and added, "we will take it from there".

    [04] House President - Bulgarian delegation

    Nicosia, Jul 24 (CNA) -- The parliaments of Cyprus and Bulgaria wish to enhance their relations and cooperation, which are "at a very good level", Cyprus House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou said here today after meeting a delegation of the Council on European issues of the Bulgarian National Assembly, headed by Vice-Chairman Vasil Gotzev.

    Gotzev reffered to the two countries' common bid to join the European Union, noting that "membership does not only means rights but also obligations."

    [05] Cyprus - Turkish occupied areas - Riot

    Nicosia, Jul 24 (CNA) - Some 3,000 victims of a banking scandal in the Turkish- occupied areas of Cyprus briefly occupied the so-called "parliament" today and took the illegal "prime minister" Dervis Eroglu hostage.

    The demonstrators hurled eggs, plastic bottles and wooden sticks at the "parliament" building, calling for the resignation of the illegal "government" and demanding compensation for their losses.

    [06] Proximity talks - Rauf Denktash

    by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Jul 24 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto had a sixty-minute meeting today with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in the framework of the UN-sponsored proximity talks, which resumed here with an aim to lead to substantive negotiations for Cyprus.

    Even though no statements were made after the meeting, Denktash told reporters before entering the meeting at UN headquarters that the Turkish Cypriot side brought 30 pages of answers to de Soto's thoughts put forward during the previous phase of the talks earler this month.
