[03] President Clerides - Greek Prime Minister - Talks

Athens, Nov 14 (CNA) - Athens and Nicosia believe the UN-led proximity talks on Cyprus are generally positive and useful to efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem, Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis said today after a meeting with President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides in Athens.

President Clerides is visiting Athens after the conclusion on Friday of the 5th round of proximity talks in Geneva, aiming at reaching a solution to the political problem of the island, divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory. CNA/KI/GG/RG/2000

[04] Cyprus problem - USA - RAND Corporation - Proposals

Washington, Nov 14 (CNA) - US RAND Corporation has prepared a 300-page report, containing proposals on the new US administration's foreign and security policy, including a reference to Cyprus, divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

The organisation notes that "the goal of a bizonal bicommunal federation remains appropriate" for Cyprus and that "the US can have a role, but not necessarily the leading role, in any settlement arrangements for the island". CNA/DA/RG/2000

[05] Islamic Summit Conference - Declaration

Doha, Nov 14 (CNA) - The ninth session of the Islamic Summit Conference, which concluded its two-day deliberations last night, issued a declaration by which it reaffirms the solidarity of the Conference with the Palestinian people and condemns Israel's "consistent refusal to respect the resolutions and the will of the international community, which assert the right of the Palestinian people to achieve its full rights and establish its independent state".

The Organisation of the Islamic Conference countries also demand Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon and reaffirm the Declaration on the Palestinian Independence Intifadah, adopted during the session, "in particular concerning guaranteeing international protection for the unarmed Palestinian people against the barbaric Israeli aggression". [06] President Clerides - Cyprus talks

Nicosia, Nov 14 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said that around June UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan would submit to the two sides in Cyprus a comprehensive plan for a solution to the Cyprus problem and that Annan would listen to the views of the two sides on this future document, before getting into direct negotiations.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport, on his arrival from Athens, where he held talks with the Greek government, on his return from Geneva, where the fifth round of UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem took place, President Clerides said this last round was better than the previous four, noting that a paper submitted by Annan during this round contained more satisfactory than negative points.
