    [01] Sports: Cypriot team qualify for Euro basketball cup

    Nicosia, Feb 7 (CNA) -- Keravnos basketball club of Strovolos, Cyprus, made history in the island's sports last night qualifying for the quarterfinals of the European Saporta Cup.

    The Cypriot team beat at home Borac Nektar of Bosnia Herzecovina 91-73 covering the 15-point difference of the first game (89-74) played in Banja Luka.

    It is the first time that a Cypriot basketball team reach the quarterfinals (best eight) of a European tournament.

    Keravnos will play for the Saporta Cup quarterfinals against Pamesa Valencia, Spain.

    [03] Greek Cypriot trade unions - KTOS

    Nicosia, Feb 7 (CNA) - Three Greek Cypriot teachers' unions, POED, OELMEK and OLTEK, have sent a letter to Education International, requesting the organisation's intervention to terminate the oppressive measures taken by the self-styled regime in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus against the fraternal Turkish Cypriot union of teachers, KTOS.

    In their letter, the Greek Cypriot trade unions state that the Turkish Cypriot teachers dared to publish a message in the form of a paid advertisement in the Tukrish Cypriot press, demanding from Turkey "to leave Turkish Cypriots in peace, because they do not want her money or her proposed set of austerity measures, nor do they want to be her slaves".     [05] Cyprus - New University

    Nicosia, Feb 7 (CNA) - The Cyprus Council of Ministers, which convened this morning under President Glafcos Clerides, has decided to establish a University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

    Announcing the decision, Education and Culture Minister Ouranios Ioannides said the aim of the new University is to prepare young people to enter the labour market equipped with upgraded qualifications, as is the trend today in Europe. CNA/MA/RG/GP/2001
