    [01] Former EU Commissioner - Visit

    Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) -- Hans van den Broek, former European Union commissioner responsible for enlargement, has welcomed the progress Cyprus is making in its accession course for EU membership, expressing the readiness to assist wherever he can this process.

    The retired Dutch diplomat, on a visit to the island at the invitation of the Institute for Eurodemocracy, called on Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to be more forthcoming in the UN-led peace effort, which started in December 1999 with proximity talks between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides and which the latter has abandoned.

    [02] Dutch State Secretary for Foreign Affairs - Visit

    Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) -- Dick Benschop, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, arrives here Monday on a two-day official visit during which he will have talks at the Foreign Ministry and be received by President Glafcos Clerides.

    The Dutch diplomat will also have separate meetings with House President Spyros Kyprianou, the head of Cyprus' negotiating team with the European Union George Vassiliou and the President of the Socialdemocrats Vasos Lyssarides.

    [03] UNFICYP - Financial performance report

    Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) -- The UN General Assembly appropriated just over 45 million US dollars gross for the maintenance of the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for the period July 1999 to end of June 2000, according to a report by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, released on Tuesday as an official UN document.

    One third of the cost amounting to 14,630,810 m. is provided by the government of Cyprus and just over 6 m. is the voluntary contribution of Greece.

    [04] Deputy House President - Iranian parliamentary delegation

    Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives Deputy President Nicos Anastasiades received here today a five-member delegation from the Iranian parliament, currently in Cyprus for a three-day official visit, at the invitation of the island's parliament.

    The two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two parliaments.

    [05] Cypriot MPs - Dublin - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) -- President of the Foreign and European Affairs Committee of the Cyprus House of Representatives, Tassos Papadopoulos, has said a viable solution to the Cyprus problem and the island's accession to the European Union (EU) would "allow the people of Cyprus to live in conditions of lasting peace, stability and social and economic prosperity".

    Speaking in Dublin, at the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of the Oireachtas, Papadopoulos said Cyprus would appreciate the contribution of the Joint Committee "to the efforts of the people of Cyprus to reach a viable solution to the Cyprus problem, as well as to enter the EU".
