    [02] President Bush - Report on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- The United States remains committed to the United Nations effort to find a just and lasting settlement to the Cyprus problem, President George Bush says in his report on Cyprus, submitted to the Congress.

    The report "on the progress toward a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus question" covers the period between February 1 and March 31, 2001.

    [03] Foreign Minister - Freed Greek Cypriot - Statement

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides was very critical today of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime with respect to the five-month unlawful detention of Greek Cypriot Panicos Tziakourmas, who was set free today.

    "My position is that Tziakourmas was freed from being a hostage of a regime, which has no scruples," Kasoulides said here today, adding that "this regime accepted to see an innocent man abducted, even after strong evidence the authorities of the British Bases supplied, to be used in exchange for Turkish Cypriot Omer Tekogul."

    [04] Spokesman - France - Cyprus - Statement

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- The government has welcomed as "crystal clear and very positive" a statement by the French foreign ministry with regard to Cyprus' accession course to the European Union, efforts for a peaceful settlement in Cyprus and bilateral ties.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou also said the statement, ahead of tonight's arrival of French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine for a visit, the first by a French foreign minister to the Republic, proves that efforts for a peaceful settlement are on the right track.

    [05] Cyprus Rally - Press Conference

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus will be once again in the world's athletic spotlight from 31 May to 3 June when the Cyprus Rally, which is included in the World Championship for the second time, will take take.

    Speaking here today at the Cyprus Rally launch press conference Chairman of the organióing committee George Pavlides said that the next goal "is to ensure that the Cyprus Rally stays as a permanent feature of the World Championship", adding that last year's event was credited as being almost excellent and that this year "we'll do even better".

    [06] Cyprus - Military exercises - Turkish violations

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos said here today all foreseen procedures were carried out regarding the violation of Cyprus' airspace and the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR) by Turkish war jets during teh two-day military exercise code-named "Toxotis-Vergina" which ended today.

    The minister told the press that the exercise held with the participation of Greece's Air and Navy forces together with the Cyprus Republic's armed forces, was successful.

    [07] Cyprus - Vedrine - Arrival

    Larnaca, Apr 26 (CNA) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs of France Hubert Vedrine arrived here tonight for a two-day visit and was welcomed at Larnaca airport by his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides.

    Later tonight, Vedrine will attend a dinner in Nicosia hosted in his honour by Kasoulides. CNA/MAN/RM/NM/2001
