[01] Spokesman - US Secretary of State

Nicosia, May 22 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has not detected any substantive change in US policy on Cyprus and considers American support for the European Union decision to accept Cyprus as a member even without a political settlement satisfactory.

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has said nothing can obstruct the Republic's course to Europe, noting that Brussels were well aware of the prospect of having Cyprus join as a divided country, as a result of the continuing occupation of the island's northern third after the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    [06] Cyprus - UNESCO - Cultural heritage

Nicosia, May 22 (CNA) - The Cyprus Republic submitted to UNESCO the instrument of ratification of the protocol for the protection of cultural heritage in the event of an armed struggle, a protocol which is described as especially significant for Cyprus since it includes provisions for the protection of cultural heritage in the Turkish occupied north and imposes criminal responsibility on the country which violates it.

An official statement issued here today said that, according to the protocol, one country which occupies the whole or part of another country's territory has an obligation to prohibit and impede any illegal export, transport or transfer of the ownership of cultural heritage, as well as every archaeological excavation, apart from cases where it is necessary for the protection and registration of cultural heritage.
