    [03] President Clerides - House President - First Meeting

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has expressed full confidence in the newly-elected President of the House of Representatives, Demetris Christofias, when the latter stands in for the President in his absence.

    "I discussed with him various issues and sought his advice on the execution of my duties as Acting President of the Republic," said Christofias, who is also the General Secretary of the main opposition AKEL party, after his first meeting with President Clerides, a courtesy call at the Presidential Palace.

    [04] Spokesman - Israel - Representations

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- Cyprus is making representations to Israel with regard to violations of the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR) by Israeli aircraft, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    "The Israeli air force has violated the flight information plans they themselves had submitted to our authorities and for which they had secured our permission," he told the press after a cabinet meeting.

    [05] Foreign Minister - EU

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides leaves Saturday on a tour of European cities, during which he is to attend European Union meetings, pay an official visit and meet the Republic's ambassadors serving in EU member states.

    An official press release said today Kasoulides will be in Brussels tomorrow to brief the Cypriot ambassadors on the latest developments in the accession negotiations.

    [06] Spokesman - Cyprus peace effort

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- The government has renewed its call to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to invite the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to a fresh round of peace talks, noting that the Turkish side has been given ample time to reconsider its unacceptable conditions in order to return to the UN- sponsored proximity talks.

    "We believe that a reasonable period of time has elapsed and the Secretary General has to invited Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to talks and if he does not respond, then responsibility for the absence of peace negotiations should be laid on Denktash's shoulders," Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    [07] House President - Congratulatory messages

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- The US, Russia and Greece are among many countries that have sent congratulatory messages to the newly-elected President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias.

    Greek Parliamentary Speaker Apostolos Kaklamanis has invited his Cypriot counterpart to visit Athens, the first official visit abroad by Christofias since his election to the second highest post of the Republic of Cyprus on Thursday.

    [08] Kenyan President - Limassol

    Limassol, Jun 8 (CNA) -- Kenyan President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi believes that there is scope to improve economic and commercial ties between his country and Cyprus in a way that each country will make the most out of the other's advantages.

    Speaking at a special welcoming ceremony at the Limassol Town Hall, on the south coast, President Arap Moi reiterated his country's firm support for the peaceful resolution of the Cyprus question and said the people of Cyprus have the right to live in peace.
