    EU Summit - Conclusions

by Maria Koniotou Gothenburg, Jun 16 (CNA) - The EU Summit that concluded today in Gothenburg reaffirmed the road map set out in the Nice Summit as the framework for the successful completion of the enlargement process and said this map should make it possible to complete negotiations by the end of 2002 for those candidate countries that were ready, with the objective being their participation in the European Parliament elections of 2004 as members.

In the conclusions adopted by the Summit, it is also noted that the enlargement process is irreversible and that candidate countries would continue to be judged solely on their own merits, while a paragraph referring to Turkey's bid to join the Union said good progress had been made in implementing the pre-accession strategy for Turkey and urged the country to take concrete measures to implement the priorities of the Accession Partnership, noting that in a number of areas such as human rights further progress was needed.

Cyprus government - UN resolution - UNFICYP

Nicosia, Jun 16 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou today expressed the Cyprus government's satisfaction regarding UN Security Council resolution 1354, adopted yesterday, on the renewal of the UN peacekeeping force (UNFICYP) mandate in Cyprus for another six months, noting that "it moves within the correct political framework, regarding the substance of a Cyprus settlement" and the process to be followed in that direction.

Papapetrou told CNA "it was expected" that the resolution would not contain an addendum requested by Turkey and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, and confirmed that Turkey had made efforts towards the inclusion of an addendum.

    Cyprus President - EU Summit

by Maria Koniotou Gothenburg, Jun 16 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has pointed out that what is important for Cyprus in the conclusions of Gothenburg's EU Summit, which was wrapped up here today, was the decision taken that the accession course of applicant countries could not be halted and noted that this "is something very good not only for us but also for all the applicant countries".

Speaking after the meeting of the leaders of the 15 member-states with the leaders of the candidate countries, President Clerides also said that according to the timetable set out in the conclusions, "those countries that will close all chapters (of the acquis communautaire) by the year 2002, will be members by 2003, and in 2004 will participate in the elections for the next European Parliament".
