    [03] UN - Cyprus - Racism report

    Nicosia, Jul 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus' compliance with its international obligations emanating from the Convention on the Elimination of every form of Racial Discrimination will come under scrutiny next week in Geneva at a meeting of a UN commission on racism.

    According to an official press release, Attorney General Alecos Markides, Ombudswoman Iliana Nicolaou and Law Commissioner George Stavrinakis will be in Geneva for the debate on the Republic's 15th periodical report on the elimination of racism. CNA/MM/RM/2001

    [04] Cyprus - Czech Republic - Ministers of Agriculture

    Nicosia, Jul 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Costas Themistocleous met today with his Czech counterpart Ing. Jen Fencl, here on a two-day private visit, to discuss both countries' accession course to the European Union.

    Speaking to CNA after the meeting, Themistocleous expressed conviction that both countries "based on the progress achieved so far in all areas" particularly in the fields of environment and agriculture will be among the first countries to accede into the EU. CNA/AAR/RM/2001

    [05] Cyprus - EU accession talks - Environment

    Brussels, Jul 27 (CNA) - Ôhe Cyprus Republic today provisionally closed one of the most difficult chapters in the accession talks with the European Union, the chapter on the Environment, during the 13 th Meeting of the Inter-Governmental Conference at deputy level, held in Brussels, where it was represented by its chief negotiator George Vassiliou.

    Cyprus has now completed 23 out of 29 chapters that are to be examined, since opening accession talks in 1998 and is still leading the other candidate states. CNA/NM/AAR/RM/2001

    [06] Cyprus - Foreign Trade Statistics

    Nicosia, Jul 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus' total imports during the first four months of 2001 reached 904,8 million pounds, compared to 699,6 m. in the respective period in 2000 and total exports amounted to 194,6 m. as compared to 196,2 m. in the period between January-April 2000 while the trade deficit accounted for 710,1 m. compared to 503,3 in the same period in 2000.

    According to official statistics, imports for home consumption increased to 780,3 m. during January - March 2001 compared to 569,5 m. in the respective period of 2000.
