    [01] US President - Report on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) -- The United States remain committed to the United Nations effort to find a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem, US President George Bush has stated in his covering letter submitted to the Congress together with the latest report on on the progress toward a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus question, which covers the period between June 1 - July 31, 2001.

    In his letter, US President Bush states that "the United Nations continued in its efforts to resume the proximity talks on Cyprus that started in December 1999."

    [03] Foreign Minister - Diplomatic Academy of Moscow - Speech

    By Nicos Markides Moscow, Aug 30 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has outlined the basic premises of Cyprus' foreign policy in a speech at the Diplomatic Academy of Moscow, expressing "great appreciation for the unequivocal and steadfast support and encouragement" Cyprus has received from Russia hoping that this would continue.

    The minister said government policy rested primarily on two fronts, to solve the Cyprus question and reunite the country, divided since Turkish troops invaded in 1974, and to join the European Union, adding that Nicosia also wishes to contribute to efforts to achieve comprehensive peace in the Eastern Mediterranean and play an active role in the Balkan region.     [05] Cyprus - Turkey - Cultural heritage

    Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva Alexandros Vikis has strongly protested against the illegal activities undertaken by Turkey in the areas of the Republic it occupies for the past 27 years and noted that the excavations have "a destructive effect on the cultural heritage" of Cyprus.

    In a letter to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, Vikis said that the illegal excavations first started in August 1999 at the Salamis area, adding that the Cyprus Department of Antiquities has been prevented from carrying our any excavations at Salamis or at any other site in the occupied areas of the Republic.     [06] Overseas Cypriots - Congress - Ends

    Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) -- The 12th World Congress of Overseas Cypriots ended here today with the adoption of several resolutions regarding the support of the overseas Cypriots to the efforts in reaching a just solution to the Cyprus problem. The delegates also reached decisions concerning their strategic plans for the future.

    In their resolutions, the delegates call upon the governments of the countries they live in and the UN Secretary General to intensify their efforts in promoting the UN-led process in reaching a just and lasting settlement of the Cyprus problem based on relevant Security Council resolutions and the aquis communautaire.
