    [01] Defence Minister - Annual military manoeuvres

    Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA) -- The National Guard's annual military manoeuvres next month will take place as planned, Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos said here today, adding that the Greek armed forces will also participate in the exercise code-named "Nikiforos" (bearer of victory).

    "The maneouvres are planned in consultation with Greece in one part and nothing has changed so far from our original plans," Hasikos said speaking after a cabinet meeting.

    [02] Greek Defence Minister - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA)-- Greece's National Defence Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos arrives in Cyprus Sunday afternoon to represent the Greek government in celebrations on the island for the Independence Day of the Republic of Cyprus.

    The Greek Minister will attend the October 1st military parade in Nicosia marking the 41th anniversary of Cyprus' independence from the British colonial rule. President Glafcos Clerides will take the salute. CNA/MK/GP/2001

    [05] Government - Economy - Security measures

    Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA) -- The government is making preemptive moves to ensure that it has the support of all social partners in its efforts to avert any adverse fallout on the local economy, as a result of developments around the globe in the aftermath of the terrorist attack against the US earlier this month.

    In a different move, a ministerial committee on security matters decided to increase police presence at airports and buy special equipment to boost security measures.

    [06] UN - Cyprus - Statement

    Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA) -- The UN Security Council has expressed disappointment for the "unjustified decision" of the Turkish side to decline an invitation by the UN Secretary General to resume the search for a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus in New York in September.

    The Council stressed that "progress can only be made at the negotiating table" and urged all those concerned to cooperate with Kofi Annan and his Special Adviser Alvaro de Soto to help move the peace process forward.

    [07] Maritime Cyprus 2001 - Congress

    Limassol, Sep 26 (CNA) -- Director of Cyprus Merchant Shipping Department Sergios Sergiou said he was "very pleased" with the high turn out and the quality of speeches at this year's biennial shipping conference "Maritime Cyprus 2001", which ended here today.

    Sergiou told CNA that some 700 delegates from 35 countries attended the three- day meeting, which focused on challenges and prospects for shipping as a global industry.
