    [03] Cyprus President - President Bush - Message

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) -- US President George W. Bush has said the strong bonds of friendship existing between Cyprus and the US will enable the two countries to fight the scourge of terrorism.

    In his message of congratulations to Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, on the anniversary of the independence of Cyprus on 1 October, President Bush thanked the President and "the Cypriot people for the touching words of support following the attacks against the US on September 11."     [04] Cyprus President - Finnish Ambassadors

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) -- Finland's Ambassador to Cyprus, based in Israel, Pasi Patokallio expressed today his country's firm support and confidence in UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's and his special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto' s efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, adding that "either proximity or indirect peace talks will have to resume as soon as possible in order to continue the efforts to reach a negotiated settlement."

    Speaking after a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, Patokallio, heading a Finnish Foreign Ministry delegation, comprising Finland's Ambassadors to Greece and Turkey, also said that Cyprus will be Finland's European Union partner. CNA/RM/MM/2001

    [05] President Clerides - Islamic Conference

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA)-- President Glafcos Clerides is sending a special envoy to four member-states of the Islamic Conference to convey to their leaders a "presidential message" with a view to avert any move towards recognition of the illegal regime in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus.

    Clerides' special envoy, Honorary President of the Social Democrats party Vassos Lyssarides, embarks today on a series of special assignments that will take him to Libya, Tunis, Morocco and Algeria. CNA/GS/MM/2001

    [06] Communications Minister - British High Commissioner

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) -- Communications and Works Minister Averof Neofytou said today that the government's decision to allow American military aircraft to use Cyprus' air space and land on the island as necessary for activities against terrorism, is a measure indicating that Cyprus is part of the common effort to combat terrorism, adding that security measures taken at airports are considered by other countries satisfactory.

    "Today's cabinet decision is something we owe to the common fight against terrorism and our moves are in line with action taken by European Union member states," Averof said after a meeting with new British High Commissioner to Cyprus Lyn Parker.

    [07] Greece - Russia - France - Cyprus' Independence

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) -- Presidents of Greece, Russia and France have expressed their countries' full support for the efforts to reach a comprehensive, just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, based on the relevant UN resolutions.

    According to an official press release, in his message to Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, on the occasion of the 41st anniversary of Cyprus' Independence, Greek President Constantinos Stephanopoulos has said "Cyprus' accession into the European Union is a national priority", adding that "Cyprus' excellent record in the accession negotiations builds up confidence that Cyprus will soon accede to the Union."     [08] Spokesman - Council of Ministers - US

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) -- The cabinet decided Thursday that as of today American warplanes will be allowed to use Cyprus' air space and land at the Republic's airports for an indefinite period of time, government spokesman Michalis Papapetrou announced, adding that the permission was granted, following a request by Washington.

    Speaking after today's Council of Ministers meeting, Papapetrou said these facilities were offered as part of the worldwide effort against terrorism, noting that "every country has an obligation to contribute to the fight against terrorism."

    US Ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler welcomed today's cabinet decision describing it "ineed impressive" and pointing out that it shows that Cyprus is really moving forward in a serious way in all parts of the agenda against terrorism. CNA/MK/RM/MM/2001

    [09] Greece - Britain - Foreign Ministers - Cyprus

    London, Oct 4 (CNA) -- The Cyprus problem and the efforts aiming at reaching a solution, as well as the battle against terrorism were among the issues discussed here today between Greece's Foreign Minister George Papandreou and British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw.

    Replying to questions by CNA after the meeting, Straw said "there is no danger as far as we are concerned regarding Cyprus' position being marginalised" under the new situation created after the terrorist attacks in the US, and noted that Britain's Special Envoy Lord David Hannay "has played an effective role in trying to secure a political process to resolve the Cyprus question."     [10] Finance Minister - House Plenary - State Budget 2002

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) -- Last month's terrorist attacks in the US and the uncertainty that prevails worldwide will have negative repercussions on the global economy as well as the Cypriot economy, especially because the latter depends heavily on external factors and tourism, Finance Minister Takis Klerides said here today, as he tabled the state budget for 2002 to the House of Representatives.

    "The rate of growth so far and the economic indicators are considered very satisfactory but developments cause concern about future economic prospects, " the minister told today's first House plenary, stressing that the government is monitoring closely developments and will take all necessary measures to minimize any adverse fallout.
