Cyprus - UN Day - UNFICYP

Nicosia, Oct 21 (CNA) -- As the UN welcomed Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the buffer zone today, to mark 56 years since its establishment, people from both sides of the divide have welcomed such events which give them the chance to see each other and talk about the good old days before the country was divided as a result of the 1974 Turkish invasion.

Opening today's special day, Acting Deputy Representative of the UN Secretary General and Chief of Mission Zbigniew Wlosovicz said he was very pleased to see the people getting together, pointing out that "this year there is added meaning to the celebration since the recently announced award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the UN and the Secretary General Kofi Annan."

It is thirteen years now since UNFICYP held its first UN Day celebrations and Wlosovicz noted that "UN Day celebrations at the buffer zone have become" a tradition," describing UN Day for the Peace Keeping Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP), here since 1964, as "one of the highlights of the year."|
