Britain reiterates backing for Cyprus' EU accession

London, Nov 29 (CNA) -- Britain will not allow anybody to hinder Cyprus' entry into the European Union, once the country successfully completes its accession negotiations, Minister for Europe Peter Hain has said.

He reiterated that Cyprus, reunited or not, would be accepted into the Union.

"We strongly endorse the European objective of accepting a united island into the EU as part of the enlargement process. The Cypriots want to join. If the island were not united, we would still accept Cyprus' entrance to the European Union," Hain told the House of Commons, replying to a question by Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake.

Hain said Britain would not allow "anyone to upset that", provided that the Cypriots had completed the full process of negotiation and closed all the chapters.

"Currently Cyprus is in the lead among all the applicant countries in doing so," Hain added.

Cyprus has provisionally closed 23 out of 29 chapters of the acquis communautaire. It is set to close one more, that of home affairs and justice, in early December.
