    Security Council welcomes start of direct talks

    Nicosia, Dec 13 (CNA) -- The UN Security Council has welcomed the start of direct talks between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in mid January and hopes it will lead to a comprehensive settlement.

    Turkey would not start EU screening process, says Kasoulides

    Brussels, Dec 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has expressed the view that EU Laeken Summit to take place December 14-15, will pay Turkey back for the recent Turkish stance to the Cyprus question and the European defence policy (military force). He did not though think that Turkey would manage to secure beginning of its screening process during this Summit.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Dec 13 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 14/12/2001 to 15/12/2001

    On Friday, the weather will be cloudy at times with rain. The winds will be southwesterly fresh to strong and the sea moderate.

    On Saturday, there will be some sunny spells but at time the weather will become partly cloudy with some rain over Troodos.

    The temperature will range from 8 to 14 inland and from 12 to 18 on the coast.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 16/12/2001 to 17/12/2001

    On Sunday, there will be prolonged clear periods with occassional cloud and local showers over the mountains.

    On Monday, the weather will gradually become rather unsettled with rain and local storms.

    Annan hopes for comprehensive settlement in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Dec 13 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan regards the start of direct talks between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides a "positive development" and hopes negotiations will take place in good faith and lead to a comprehensive settlement.

    Cyprus satisfied with UN statement

    Brussels, Dec 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has expressed satisfaction with yesterday's statement on Cyprus by the UN Security Council President describing as important the fact that the statement did not just welcome the resumption of the UN-led talks on Cyprus, through direct negotiations, scheduled to begin in mid-January 2002, but also reiterated the UN Secretary General's good offices mission, based on UN resolution 1250 that defines, as Kasoulides noted, the negotiating rules.

    Major General Jin Ha Hwang new UNFICYP chief

    Nicosia, Dec 13 (CNA) - Major General Jin Ha Hwang has been appointed as Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), to succeed Major General Victory Rana, who relinquishes his post on December 15. The appointment was announced yesterday by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    Christofias appeals for end of anti-democratic actions in north

    Nicosia, Dec 13 (CNA) -- House of Representatives President and left-wing AKEL General Secretary, Demetris Christofias, appealed today to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and President of the European Parliament Nicole Fontaine to exert their influence so that the self-styled regime in the occupied by Turkish troops north of Cyprus terminates its anti-democratic actions against Turkish Cypriot daily newspaper "Avrupa" and a Turkish Cypriot teacher who was dismissed from her post for criticising the regime.
