    Cyprus parties express backing for direct talks, EU accession

    Nicosia, Jan 24 (CNA) -- The four biggest parliamentary parties in Cyprus have given their full backing to President Glafcos Clerides' engagement in direct talks with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, saying that the solution of the protracted Cyprus question should secure the unity of the state.

    Deputies from the ruling party as well as the three main opposition parties expressed support for Cyprus' bid to join the European Union, which they said could act as a catalyst on the peace effort.

    Nicosia, Jan 24 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 25/01/2002 to 26/1/2002

    Ôhe weather mainly fine and sunny. The winds light to moderate. The temperature between 7C min and 17C max. Over the coast and between 5C min and 15C max. inland.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 27/1/2002 to 28/1/2002

    US congressman welcomes initiative on missing persons in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jan 24 (CNA) -- US Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY) has stated that the US House of Representatives and the US Senate will welcome an end to the humanitarian issue of the missing persons in Cyprus, which he called a tragic situation for the people of the island.

    Cyprus government engaged in moves to remove landmines

    Nicosia, Jan 24 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government had decided to push, through the House of Representatives, for the ratification of the Convention on the prohibition of anti-personnel mines and in line with this decision it is engaging in certain moves to remove landmines from the ceasefire line, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou announced here today, stressing that this decision is not dependent on a positive response from the Turkish occupation army.

    Speaking after today's cabinet meeting, he said the National Guard, the Republic's armed forces, has no objection to such a move as it believes that it would not create any problems in the country's defence capability.

    Nicosia, Jan 24 (CNA) -- Cyprus Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos who is on an official visit to the People's Republic of China had several meetings with Chinese officials and visited military installations and defence industries. Today he flew to Shangai at the invitation of the military governor of the city.
