    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 8/03/2002 to 9/03/2002

    Weather: Mainly fine and expectionally mild. Probability of mist or fog patches and low cloud towards dawn.

    Wind: W'ly to SW'ly gentle to moderate during the day and NW'ly to NE'ly ligh to gentle overnight.

    State of Sea: Slight locally up to moderate in the afternoon

    Temperature: Maximum temperature 25C inland and 23C over coast. Minimum temperature 8C inland 11C over coast.

    Outlook on Sunday and Monday: 10/03/2002 to 11/03/2002

    Weather: Partly cloudy at times with probability of showers on Monday.

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) -- The government dismissed today statements by Turkey's minister responsible for Cyprus that the UN-led peace talks, which began in mid January, should continue without any time restraints.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou pointed out that Cyprus is edging closer to European Union accession, with or without a political settlement, as each day goes by.

    Attorney General: Turkey a problematic state in CoE

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) -- Turkey is a particularly problematic member state of the Council of Europe, according to Cyprus' Attorney General Alecos Markides, who believes that Ankara's non compliance with European Court of Human Rights rulings is causing difficulties to the country itself as well as to the Council of Europe.

    Speaking to CNA, Markides said the Cyprus government will continue to seek full implementation of Court judgments in its fourth inter-state application against Turkey and in a case a Greek Cypriot brought and won before the Court on human rights grounds.

    Defence Minister: Turkish claims are lies and exaggerations

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) -- Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos described today as "lies and exaggerations" claims in the Turkish press relating to the Republic's military capabilities, and said Ankara's overall approach in this respect is "provocative."

    He also stressed that the ongoing peace effort has no bearing on government plans to boost its defences, adding that the Cypriot authorities are in a position to meet its obligation with regard to search and rescue (SAR) operations in the region, which Nicosia has taken over from London.

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNÁ) -- The President of the Greek Olympic Committee Athens 2004, Yianna Angelopoulou-Daskalaki, who is on a visit to Cyprus to promote the Games, had a working luncheon today with the President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides.

    Speaking afterwards to the press she said the contribution of Cyprus towards organizing the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 will be "multiple", explaining that "It will not be only economic or on the level of cooperation in tourism, infrastructure and investment, but it will be for us more than symbolic".

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) - When Cyprus enters the EU, the main negotiators on the Cyprus question will be the EU itself and Turkey, Chairman of the France-Cyprus Friendship Group at the French Senate, Senator Andre Rouviere said here today, adding the course of the direct talks on Cyprus, held since mid January between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, will be a long one.

    Rouviere heads a five-member delegation of the French Senate, in Cyprus on a six-day official visit. The delegation had a meeting this morning with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

    Cyprus FM satisfied with Commonwealth Conference

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides expressed today satisfaction with the support of the Commonwealth countries in finding a solution to the Cyprus problem based on the relevant United Nations resolutions.

    Speaking on his return to Cyprus from Australia where the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting took place, Kasoulides said that a great number of heads of States and governments reaffirmed their support of the previous UN resolutions on Cyprus and welcomed the ongoing direct talks in Nicosia between the Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.
