    UN envoy meets Clerides and Denktash separately

    Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides had here today a working breakfast with UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro De Soto, who leaves tonight for Ankara and Athens, where he will meet with government officials to discuss developments in the Cyprus question.

    De Soto was due to cross later this morning to the island's Turkish- occupied areas to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    In the afternoon he will attend the last Clerides-Denktash meeting of the second round of the UN-led direct talks, which began in mid January 2002, with a view to reach a comprehensive settlement of the protracted Cyprus problem.

    Second round of direct talks ends

    Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- The last meeting of the second round of UN-led direct talks between the Greek and the Turkish Cypriot sides was concluded here this afternoon.

    President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met for about 90 minutes, in the presence of UN Secretary General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto.

    Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- Defence Minister Sokratis Hasikos said here today that a three-member delegation of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) is in Cyprus on a two-day visit to inspect military installations and equipment of the National Guard (army).

    Christofias meets Libyan President of the General People's Congress

    Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- House President Demetris Christofias, who paid a three-day official visit to Libya, has met in Sirte with President of the General People's Congress of Libya, Zenati Mohamed Al Zenati and both expressed a wish for further strengthening bilateral relations.

    Today Christofias left Libya for Egypt to pay an official visit at the invitation of his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Fathry Sorour.

    Christofias invited his Libyan counterpart to visit Cyprus officially, an invitation that was accepted by Zenati.

    Christofias and Zenati discussed current developments on the Cyprus problem and the Middle East and stressed the need for a peaceful resolution on the basis of relevant UN resolutions in both cases.

    The House President also met yesterday in Tripoli with Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Libya's General People's Congress Suleyman Shhumi and later on held a meeting with Cypriot businessmen who work and reside in Libya. CNA/RM/MM/2002 ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY

    Talat: We support a federal Cyprus to accede to the EU

    Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- The Republican Turkish Party (RTP) supports a federal solution to the Cyprus problem, leader of the Turkish Cypriot party RTP Mehmet Ali Talat said here today, adding that Cyprus' future accession to the European Union would benefit both communities on the island.

    Speaking after an RTP delegation met with a delegation of the Greek Cypriot Social Democrats Movement (KISOS), Talat said there has been no progress yet in the UN-led peace talks, which began here in mid January, and he sent out the message to Turkey and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that a solution in Cyprus is imperative.
