    Kofi Annan asks for 43 million dollars for UNFICYP funding

    New York, Mar 30 (CNA)- The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan recommends the appropriation of 43,652,700 dollars, for the maintenance of the peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), for the 12-month period from 1 July 2002 to 30 June 2003.

    The recommendation is contained in his report to the General Assembly, released yesterday at the UN. The amount of 20,505,500 dollars is to be funded through voluntary contributions from the governments of Cyprus and Greece.

    Nicosia, Mar 30 (CNA) -- Summer time starts in Cyprus Sunday March 31 and clocks will go forward by one hour at 03.00.

    Summer time will end on Sunday, 27 October, in line with the European Union.

    Government extremely concerned about Middle East

    Nicosia, Mar 30 (CNA) -- The government said today it was extremely concerned about the worsening situation in the Middle East and condemned the use of force and any action which results in the death of innocent victims.

    The government expressed sympathy with Yasser Arafat and urged the Israeli army to withdraw immediately from Ramallah and the Palestinian territories.

    House President:Cypriots are best served by the UN

    Nicosia, Mar 30 (CNA)-- House President Demetris Christopfias believes that the interests of all Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, are best served by the UN through their attempts to assist the two communities to achieve a comprehensive settlement by peaceful means.

    Christofias today called on the UN, the Security Council, the US and Britain to become more active in the Cyprus question and defend UN resolutions on Cyprus with regard to the peace process and the substance of the settlement.
