    President Clerides receives US envoy

    Nicosia, Sep 4 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides discussed here today developments in the search for a settlement to the protracted Cyprus problem with US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston.

    The hour-long meeting took place just before Clerides' departure for Paris, where he will meet Friday with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    Weston did not make any statement after the Presidential Palace meeting.

    CNA has learned that the US envoy expressed satisfaction with the Greek Cypriot side's efforts to reach a solution, stressing that the US administration was focusing its efforts to convince the Turkish side work on the same line as well.

    Larnaca, Sep 4 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said it has been made clear the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will not submit any documents at the meeting he will have Friday in Paris with Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    Speaking to the press at Larnaca Airport prior to his departure for Paris, Clerides said "we were not given any hint that the Secretary General will make any suggestions regarding the different positions" of the two sides.

    "From what we've been told, the Secretary General wants to listen to the two sides, identify the differences and make his own assessments," Clerides added.

    Nicosia, Sep 4 (CNA) - Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties, participating in the bicommunal meetings at Ledra Palace in Nicosia, expressed today their expectations for a substantial discussion on core issues during Friday's meeting in Paris between UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    Nicosia, Sep 4 (CNA) - The fundamental aim of Friday's meeting between UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is to keep "alive" the momentum of the UN-led direct talks on the Cyprus problem and give the procedure a new drive.

    The Athens News Agency (ANA), citing diplomatic sources, said the primary issue of discussion during today's meeting between Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Papandreou and Annan within the sidelines of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, was the Cyprus problem, in view of Friday's meeting in Paris.
