    Bicommunal trade union forum postponed

    Nicosia, Oct 31 (CNA) -- A bicommunal trade unionist meeting, due to have taken place today and tomorrow in the UN-controlled buffer zone in Nicosia, has been postponed because the Turkish Cypriot occupation regime did not allow Turkish Cypriot trade unionists to attend.

    This morning Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot trade unionists are staging separate protest rallies on either side of the divide to condemn the decision and will adopt a petition on the matter.

    Nicosia, Oct 31 (CNA) -- European Parliament Rapporteur on Cyprus accession to the European Union Jacques Poos said here today that there is a hope from both communities on the island that the problem can be solved ''in fast track scenario'' before the Copenhagen EU Summit to take place in December 12 and 13.

    Tradeunionists condemn occupation regime's tactics

    Nicosia, Oct 31 (CNA) -- A demonstration to condemn the violation of the right of Turkish Cypriot trade unionists to take part in the 4th All Cyprus Trade Union Forum, due to begin Thursday in Nicosia, was held at UN-controlled Ledra Palace checkpoint by Greek Cypriot trade unions PEO, SEK, PASIDY, ETYK, DEOK, POED, OELMEK, POAS and OLTEK. The forum will eventually be held abroad.

    A resolution approved by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot trade unions, and read at the gathering by PEO General Secretary Bambis Kiritsis, was likely to be read at similar gatherings in the occupied areas by Turkish Cypriot unions DEV-IS, TURK-SEN, KTAMS, KTOS, KTOEOS, KOOP-SEN, BES and BASIN-SEN.

    Nicosia, Oct 31 (CNA) Polands President Alexander Kwasniewski expressed his countrys support over sustained UN efforts to solve the Cyprus problem and conveyed his wish that a solution will be found soon.

    Clerides briefs clergymen on Cyprus developments

    Nicosia, Oct 31 (CNA) Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides briefed today Cyprus clergymen on the latest developments on the Cyprus problem.

    Bishop of Paphos Chrysostomos said they were given a thorough briefing by the President and pledged the Church will stand by the government and the political leadership so that united we can handle any situation.

    He said he was assured that the political leadership will not endure any pressure, adding that the time left is so little but because of President Clerides and the political leaderships experience, there will be a good ending.

    EP delegation holds contacts on acquis communautaire

    Nicosia, Oct 31 (CNA) The view that Cyprus accession to the EU will benefit not only the island but also the Union itself, was expressed here by Euro MP Ioannis Koukiades, vice President of the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Internal Market of the European Parliament.

    A delegation of the committee held meetings today with the head of the delegation of the European Commission to Cyprus, Adrian van der Meer, Attorney General Alecos Markides, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Sotiris Sotiriou and the Chairman of the House Standing Committee on European Affairs, Tassos Papadopoulos and members of the Committee.

    The purpose of the visit was to establish the course of negotiations vis-a-vis the incorporation of the acquis communautaire.

    Speaking after meeting Papadopoulos, Koukiades said, we enter Europe not because we want to but because we are useful to Europe.

    Nicosia, Oct 31 (CNA) House President Demetris Christofias expressed the hope that the visit of President of the Senate of Philippines, Franklin Drilon to Cyprus will further promote bilateral relations between Cyprus and the Philippines and forge a better cooperation between the two parliaments.
