    Clerides: We are heading towards accession

    Nicosia, Nov 28 (CNA) -- ''We are heading towards accession to the European Union,'' President Glafcos Clerides said here today, when asked by the press whether there is enough time until the December EU summit to negotiate a Cyprus settlement.

    President Clerides was speaking after today's meeting of the National Council (top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem) which discussed a letter the UN Secretary General sent to the President and Turkish Cypriot Rauf Denktash, asking them to inform him by Saturday about changes they wish to see in a proposal he put forward on a comprehensive settlement.

    The Council also discussed the reply given yesterday to Kofi Annan by the Turkish Cypriot leader, who said he was prepared to negotiate on the basis of the UN proposal. The Council will continue its deliberations on Monday.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said after the meeting that the members of the Council expressed their views and gave the President a free hand in the handling of the whole issue.

    Nicosia, Nov 28 (CNA) Around 20 thousand people in the northern Turkish occupied part of Cyprus manifested their will for a Cyprus settlement and the islands accession to the European Union (EU) at a mass rally.

    The banners echoed the sentiments of the Turkish Cypriots and some of them read ''Respect the will of the Turkish Cypriots'', ''No one can put obstacles to peace on the island'', ''Yes to a solution and accession to the European Union'', Yes to Greco-Turkish friendship'' and ''Peace, here and now.

    Cyprus and EU sign Memorandum on natural disasters

    Brussels, Nov 28 (CNA) -- The Republic of Cyprus and the European Union signed here today a Memorandum of Cooperation and Solidarity in case of natural disasters.

    The Memorandum was signed by Cyprus Civil Defence Chief Christos Kyriakides and EU Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstrom and stipulates that Cyprus will provide aid to any EU country hit by a wide scale natural disaster and that EU countries will help Cyprus deal with similar disasters.

    Nicosia, Nov 28 (CNA) A five-day exhibition on Sound and Vision opens in Nicosia on Wednesday, December 4, to inform visitors about the latest developments in the technology and design of optic acoustic products.

    The Chairman of the Cyprus Fairs Authority Iacovos Demetriou told a press conference today that the exhibition is expected to attract professionals, music lovers and in general digital technology fans.

    Early day motion on peace plan at the House of Commons

    Nicosia, Nov 28 (CNA) -- British Labour deputy Andrew Dismore tabled yesterday before the House of Commons an early day motion on ''Cyprus and UN peace plan''.

    The motion said the House urges the two communities in Cyprus to negotiate positively so that final agreement can be reached by Athens Summit on 16th April 2003, when the EU Accession Treaty is due for signature.

    It also believes that the Copenhagen Council meeting on 12th and 13th December, 2002, should agree to admit Cyprus without any qualification in the interests of all Cypriots, and welcomes the constructive work of the British government as guarantor power to this end.
