    Ad hoc committees to flesh out aspects of a settlement

    United Nations, Feb 8 (CNA) -- A UN official in Nicosia stressed that the purpose of the two ad hoc committees in Cyprus is to ''flesh out'' some aspects of a comprehensive settlement that are necessary if it is to function smoothly and effectively upon entry into force.

    The committees, comprising legal experts from both sides, are to study international treaties and legislation that will be in force, if and when a comprehensive settlement is reached to the Cyprus problem.

    ''The technical meetings should go ahead in parallel with the ongoing political negotiations,'' Robert Dann, an aide to the UN Special Adviser for Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, told UN Radio.

    Nicosia, Jan 8 (CNA) -- The London Borough of Barnet has welcomed Cyprus' accession to the European Union and asked the Prime Minister Tony Blair to apply pressure to the new government of Turkey to move towards a just, fair and permanent solution in Cyprus.

    Nicosia, Jan 8 (CNA) -- US President George Bush described as particularly significant the submission of UN Secretary-Generals plan for a Cyprus settlement to the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.

    The statement was contained in a letter accompanying his bimonthly report to the Congress on efforts towards a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus question, covering the period of October 1 - November 30, 2002.

    1550:CYPPRESS:06 Clerides to meet Weston on January 17 Nicosia, Jan 8 (CNA) President Glafcos Clerides will meet in Nicosia on January 17 with State Department Coordinator, Thomas Weston, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here Wednesday.

    Speaking after a Cabinet meeting, he also said that according to reports Russian Federation envoy for Cyprus, Vladimir Prygin will be in Cyprus next week.

    All this, in addition to the arrival of UN Secretary-Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto on Monday and the beginning of contacts meetings with the two sides from Tuesday, Papapetrou added.

    Greece appeals to Turkish side to be more positive in Cyprus talks

    Athens, Jan 8 (CNA) -- Greece has called on the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot side to engage in the negotiating process more constructively and with good faith if there is to be a solution to the Cyprus problem by February 28, 2003.

    In a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis also pledges Greeces commitment in reaching a comprehensive agreement to the Cyprus problem, on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions the soonest possible and states its willingness to engage in talks with Turkey and the UN to negotiate the terms of its future commitment to Cyprus.
