    UN top envoy meets outgoing President

    Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) -- Alvaro de Soto, UN Secretary General's special adviser on Cyprus, met here today with outgoing President Glafcos Clerides and will meet later today president-elect Tassos Papadopoulos.

    Answering to questions on today's cancelled meeting in the context of the UN-led direct talks between the island's two communities, Alvaro de Soto said that he will be informing the media later on the talks schedule.

    ''I am going to see Mr. Papadopoulos but there is no meeting between Mr. Clerides and Mr. Denktash today,'' the UN top envoy said.

    Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 18/2/2003 to 19/2/2003

    Cloudy at times with local showers and probably isolated thunderstorms. On Wednesday snowfalls are expected above 5000FT. East to Southwest wind, moderate to strong and local very strong on Tuesday, while on Wednesday will be moderate and will veer to west. The state of sea will be moderate to rough.

    On Tuesday the temperature will reach the 17C inland and coast and 6C over the mountains. On Wednesday it will decrease by 2-4C.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 20/2/2003 to 21/2/2003

    Partly cloudy at times with probability of isolated and snowfalls above 3000FT. The temperature will note further decrease.

    Papadopoulos wants no vacuum in Cyprus peace talks

    Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) -- President-elect Tassos Papadopoulos said he does not want to see any vacuum in the ongoing UN-led peace talks with the Turkish Cypriot side, adding that outgoing President Glafcos Clerides remains the representative of the Greek Cypriot side to the talks until February 28, when he (Papadopoulos) will be sworn in as the new President of the Republic.

    Speaking after his first meeting with Clerides since his electoral victory on Sunday, Papadopoulos said he asked Clerides to remain a member of the National Council, the top advisory body to the president on the Cyprus question.

    Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) -- President-elect Tassos Papadopoulos said today that ''we are ready for the visit of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan'' to Cyprus, adding that there is ''an agreed and set policy for the continuation of the negotiations with flexibility and good will, with a real and sincere aim to find a solution of the Cyprus problem if possible within the timeframes''.

    Greece to maintain close cooperation with new president

    Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) -- Greek Ambassador to Cyprus Christos Panagopoulos has assured president-elect and Democratic Party leader Tassos Papadopoulos that the existing close cooperation between Athens and Nicosia will continue and be enhanced.

    Papadopoulos said the Ambassador paid a courtesy call to congratulate him on his election victory and said they discussed in broad terms the Cyprus question and they will be meeting again soon.

    Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) - Outgoing Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides will be at the disposal of newly-elected President Tassos Papadopoulos anytime he needs him but will not participate in the regular meetings of the National Council, top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus problem.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou, replying to questions at the Presidential Palace about the intentions of Glafcos Clerides, said ''the President will be at the disposal of the new President for meetings and to express any view asked of him''.

    Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro De Soto had here today his first meeting with president elect Tassos Papadopoulos, who assured him of his wish for the unobstructed continuation of the UN-led talks for a Cyprus settlement.

    Papadopoulos said they listed a number of issues, which have to be addressed urgently in the framework of the negotiations. ''I assured Mr. De Soto of our eager wish that there will be continuity to the talks and no gap,'' he added.

    Larnaca, Feb 17 (CNA) -- Outgoing Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said the mandate now belongs to the newly-elected President Tassos Papadopoulos but he pledged to offer him any help he wants.

    Replying to questions at Larnaca Airport before departing for Brussels to attend tomorrow the European Council meeting on Iraq, Clerides said he believes the reason he lost the elections was because of the peoples desire for a change. The peoples verdict is respected, and the change will take place, he said.

    Larnaca, Feb 17 (CNA) President elect, Democratic Party leader Tassos Papadopoulos will be in Athens on Monday for talks with the Greek political leadership.
