Memorials and gatherings mark invasion anniversary
Nicosia, Jul 20 (CNA) With less than 12 months before Cyprus formal
accession to the european family, Cypriots marked here Sunday the 29th
anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of the islands
northern third.
Air-raid sirens wailed across the island at dawn remembering the
morning when Turkish troops landed first, at the now occupied town of
Kyrenia, while flags flew half-mast in the free areas of the Republic.
Thousands of Greek Cypriots flocked to the churches where memorial
services were held for those who fell and prayers were offered for the
people still missing.
The main ceremonies were held in Nicosia at the Church of Faneromeni,
in the presence of President Tassos Papadopoulos and the islands
political and church leadership.
