    President Papadopoulos wraps up his contacts in New York

    United Nations, Sep 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos wrapped up yesterday his meetings here with a working lunch he had with the five permanent members of the Security Council and a meeting with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou.

    Papadopoulos briefed UN Security Council five permanent members Permanent Representatives on the recent developments in the Cyprus question and thoroughly explained the Greek Cypriot side's positions. Papadopoulos and the five Permanent Representatives exchanged views on the prospects of the Cyprus question.

    In his remarks to the press after the lunch, Papadopoulos said ''nobody expects anything to be done before the 'elections' in Cyprus' occupied areas'' to take place in December.

    Asked whether the Security Council will have a role to play during this period as regards Cyprus Papadopoulos replied negatively.

    Papadopoulos met after his lunch with the Security Council five permanent members with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou.

    Cyprus question can and must be resolved, says Powell

    United Nations, Sep 27 (CNA)-- The Cyprus problem can and must be resolved, US Secretary of State Colin Powell said during a meeting he had here yesterday with Foreign Ministers of EU member states and acceding countries in the sidelines of the 58th session of the UN General Assembly.

    Powell noted that ''the Annan plan remains on the table'', adding that ''all sides must be encouraged to find a settlement before May 1 when Cyprus becomes a full member of the EU''.

    He also said that the US supports the accession of Turkey in the EU, as long as the country fulfills the Copenhagen criteria.

    Speaking at the meeting Cyprus Foreign Minister Georgios Iacovou said that the failure to reach a Cyprus settlement in The Hague was due

    United Nations, Sep 27 (CNA) -- Greece will not give up hope until all Cypriots can live together in harmony and security in a federal state within the framework of the European Union, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, said here yesterday adding that UN resolutions on Cyprus must be implemented.
