Turkey's intention is to solve the Cyprus problem, Gul says

    By Gregoris Savva

Athens, Oct 22 (CNA) -- Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul told CNA that his country's intention is to solve the Cyprus question, adding that the ''realities'' should be taken into consideration.

After meeting in Athens with Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, Gul told CNA that Turkey is accepting the Annan peace plan as a basis for negotiations and noted that his country would demand alterations.

Gul wrapped up today his visit to the Greek Capital and left for Turkey.

''Our intention is to solve the (Cyprus) problem but we should take all the realities into account in a realistic way'', Gul said.

Asked if Turkey accepts the Annan plan as a basis for negotiations, the Turkish minister said ''yes''.

He gave the same answer when asked whether Ankara would demand alterations to the UN Secretary General's plan aimed at achieving a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

Replying to a question whether he shares the view that the so-called elections in the Tukrish-occupied areas of Cyprus scheduled for 14 December 2003 would be a ''decisive step'' for the solution of the Cyprus question, Gul told CNA that ''it's up to the Turkish people over there, they will decide''.
