    Nicosia, Dec 1 (CNA) -- Council of Europe Secretary General Walter Schwimmer has stressed that in all contacts with the Turkish government he has constantly expressed the need for unconditional payment in the Loizidou case.

    Cyprus to destroy anti-personnel mines

    Nicosia, Dec 1 (CNA) -- Cyprus will commence tomorrow the destruction of stockpiled anti-personnel mines, as provided by the Ottawa Convention.

    Defence Minister Kyriakos Mavronicolas said here today that the destruction of the mines would begin during a special ceremony to take place tomorrow, at the presence of representatives from 125 countries, which have signed the Ottawa Convention, and EU and UN representatives.

    Mavronicolas stressed that tomorrow's ceremony will also give a strong political message, noting that the destruction of 4000 mines is expected to take place in December.

    Cyrus participates in 3rd Military World Games

    Nicosia, Dec 1 (CNA) -- Cyprus' National Guard will participate with a 58-member team in the 3rd Military World Games to take place in Catania, Italy, on 4-11 December.

    The Cypriot team will participate in the events of basketball, volleyball, field and track, judo and swimming.

    Papadopoulos wishes Turkey shows sincerity in efforts for settlement

    Larnaca, Dec 1 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has expressed the wish that after the so-called elections in Cyprus' Turkish-occupied areas Turkey will show sincerity in the process for a Cyprus settlement, as Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul had pledged.

    Speaking to the press before leaving for Rome, where he will meet tomorrow with Italian Premier and current European Union President Silvio Berlusconi, Papadopoulos said that the Cyprus problem remains in a stalemate exclusively due to the Turkish negative stance.
