    Palestinian Authority reiterates stance on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jun 29 (CNA) -- A spokesman for the Palestinian Authority has said there has been no change in its stance towards Cyprus, Fayez Younes, spokesman of the office of the Palestinian Authority here, told CNA, days after an illegal visit to the occupied areas of the Republic by the Authority's representative in Ankara.

    Cyprus President: recourse to European Court last resort

    Larnaca, Jun 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos stressed here today that he has no intention and no wish to file a recourse to the Court of Justice of the European Communities with regard to an EU package of measures aimed at assisting financially and economically the Turkish Cypriots.

    He said such course of action would be taken as a last resort and described as ''unacceptable'' the package in its present form, which is still under discussion, in that it contradicts EU rules and regulations.

    Brussels, Jun 29 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos arrived in Brussels this afternoon to take part in the extraordinary European Council, convened by Council President Bertie Ahern.

    During this afternoon's meeting, Ahern is expected to propose Prime Minister of Portugal Jose Manuel Durao Barroso as President of the European Commission to succeed Romano Prodi, whose term expires at the end of October.
