    Cyprus' convergence programme ambitious but realistic

    Brussels, Feb 16 (CNA) -- The Republic of Cyprus' revised convergence programme is described by the European Commission as ''ambitious but realistic'' regarding its aims and the return of the deficit below 3% GDP, as CNA has learned. The fundamental precondition set out by the Commission is the faithful implementation of the plan in 2005, which is considered to be a crucial year.

    Cyprus President to pay state visit to Malta

    Nicosia, Feb 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos will pay a state visit to Malta, February 17-19, during which he will have talks with Maltese President Edward Fenech Adami and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

    He will also meet with the leader of the opposition Alfred Sant and with Maltese businessmen and industrialists.

    US Congressman sends letter to US Secretary of State over illegal visit

    Nicosia, Feb 16 (CNA) -- US Congressman Frank Pallone has sent a letter to US Secretary of State Concoleezza Rice asking for the reconsideration of a visit of an American business delegation to Cyprus' occupied areas, accompanied by an attache from the US Embassy in Ankara.

    In his letter the Congressman said the delegation would be breaking the law by entering Cyprus through an ''unauthorized'' airport in the occupied areas, describing the trip ill advised and illegal.

    Nicosia, Feb 16 (CNA) -- Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus Adriaan van der Meer said today that ''the Commission has adopted a favourable opinion on the revised economic convergence programme, which was presented by the government of the Republic of Cyprus in December to the Commission.''

    EU official says trade can facilitate reconciliation

    Nicosia, Feb 16 (CNA) -- Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus Adriaan van der Meer called on the business community in Cyprus to take up the new climate created by the Green Line Regulation, adding that through trade ''we can create further economic interdependence between both communities, therefore facilitating reconciliation and peace.''

    Speaking to the press, van der Meer said that the Green Line Regulation for trade between the two sides on the island provides the legal framework and that it was now up to the business communities on both sides to make use of this new situation and to increase the volume of trade.

    Nicosia, Feb 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said the government supports and encourages without reservation trade and economic links between Greek and Turkish Cypriots within the law.

    ''Our goal is to see economic and commercial cooperation between businessmen from both communities because we believe this contributes to creating a climate of cooperation and understanding, something that will have wider favourable repercussions on the efforts to find a negotiated settlement,'' he said.
