    Russian FM postpones visit to Cyprus

    Nicosia, Feb 25 (CNA) Russias Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has postponed a visit to Cyprus, due to have taken place at the beginning of March.

    According to an official press release, the Russian Foreign Ministry has informed the Cyprus Foreign Ministry that Lavrov had to postpone his scheduled visit and the region because of "an urgent need to be present in Moscow" at the time.

    Sydney, Sep 25 (CNA) The Commonwealth Press Union (CPU) has accepted a proposal by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) to establish an alliance of the national news agencies of Commonwealth countries.

    CPU accepts CNA's suggestion to form C'wealth news agency alliance

    Sydney, Sep 25 (CNA) The Commonwealth Press Union (CPU) has accepted a proposal by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) to establish an alliance of the national news agencies of Commonwealth countries.

    The proposal to form the alliance, under CPU auspices, was tabled by CNA chief editor George Penintaex during a three-day CPU biennial conference, which ended here today.

    The acceptance of CNA's suggestion was announced at the end of the proceedings by CPU Executive Committee chairperson Vyvyan Harmsworth and CPU executive director Lindsay Ross.

    They said a preparatory meeting would be held probably in May in New Delhi, with the participation of the Press Trust of India (PTI), the Press Association UK, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) and the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

    Nicosia, Feb 25 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides described as an important development the dismissal by the European Parliament of an amendment for the urgent simultaneous approval of two regulations concerning the financing of the Turkish Cypriots and the direct trade between the EU and the Turkish occupied areas of the island.

    Inflation rate 2.8% in Cyprus for January 2005

    Nicosia, Feb 25 (CNA) - The inflation rate in Cyprus for January 2005 was 2.8 percent, according to figures provided by the Statistical Service.

    A press release says that the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices during January 2005 recorded an increase of 2.8%, compared to the corresponding index of January 2004, while in January 2004 the annual rate of change was 1.6%.

    Washington, Feb 25 (CNA) - As a matter of policy, the US has long opposed the militarisation of Cyprus, US State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher has said, noting that a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, based on the plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, would provide for a resolution of the Cyprus issue, including its security aspects.
