    EU Commissioner: Cyprus to pay attention to inflation

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Joaquin Almunia stressed here today that the Cyprus economy is in a good position with good growth rates, but at the same time pointed out that authorities and the economic and social agents need to pay attention to the evolution of inflation.

    Speaking at a joint press conference with the Finance Minister and the Governor of the Central bank he said that if the Cyprus people and authorities ''can solve the political problem, then they should do so regardless the consequences on the monetary side.

    Noting that the purpose of his visit was to discuss with the Cypriot authorities preparations as regards the Cyprus pound joining the Euro in 2008, Almunia stressed the need for an information campaign to help the public opinion.

    Cyprus President: economy must be unified in a solution

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) The economy must be unified in a small country like Cyprus, President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos has stressed here tonight, noting that this is one of the most substantial changes the Greek Cypriot side is seeking in the context of negotiations for a political solution of the island's longstanding problem.

    Opening the 30th Cyprus International Fair, President Papadopoulos addressing the Turkish Cypriots assured them that the G/C side remains firmly committed to a bizonal, bicommunal federation, to a solution that will reunify the country and ''will ensure the gradual rapprochement between the two communities in Cyprus and the social and economic reunification''.

    ''These are the basic positions that we put forward in the ongoing consultations with the U.N. Secretariat, promoting a new initiative on the part of the Secretary General for the resumption of talks that will guarantee a viable and workable solution to the Cyprus problem'', he added.

    Foreign Ministers of Cyprus & Latvia hold talks

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) The Cyprus issue, the European Commission Regulations for direct trade and aid for the Turkish Cypriots, matters of mutual interest in the EU, the Constitutional Treaty and the economic prospects of Europe, were examined during today's meeting between Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou and his Latvian counterpart Artis Pabriks.

    Cyprus Spokesman: agreement with Greece at all levels

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos and Greek Premier Costas Karamanlis are in constant communication.

    Responding to questions on the Greek Premier's impending visit to the US capital and his meeting with President George Bush in Washington, the Spokesman expressed certainty that if something arises from the meeting the Cypriot President will be informed.

    CMP accepts INFORCE recommendations

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) The Committee on Missing Persons has accepted a recommendation by INFORCE Foundation, to send here an experienced forensic anthropologist to give advise on the requirements for a forensic anthropological laboratory to be located in the buffer zone.

    The CMP held its 398th meeting today with the participation of Professor Margaret Cox, Executive Director of INFORCE who was invited by the CMP to participate in a survey of burial sites on both sides, on 17 and 18 May 2005. ''It should be noted that for the first time a joint team of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots participated in a survey on the entire territory of the Island'', a CMP press release notes.
