    Arab League supports efforts for Cyprus settlement

    Nicosia, May 24 (CNA) -- Director General of the Arab League Amr Mousa has reiterated the League's steadfast support to the efforts of the Cypriot government to achieve a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, that would be based on international law and would take into account relevant UN resolutions.

    According to an official press release issued here, the Arab League's position on the Cyprus problem was reaffirmed during a meeting yesterday between Mousa and the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Permanent Secretary Sotos Zackheos, who is visiting Cairo.

    Cyprus hopes for first place in Small European State Games

    Nicosia, May 24 (CNA) -- Cyprus will be participating in the Games of the Small States of Europe, which will take place in Andorra from May 30 to June 4, with 138 athletes, aiming at maintaining the first place it clinched in the previous biannual Games.

    President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee Kikis Lazarides told a press conference yesterday that Cyprus would be claiming the 2009 Games, noting that after the next Games in Monaco, Cyprus would begin preparations for the 2009 Games.

    Brussels, May 24 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the EU Ambassador Nicos Emiliou, acting on instructions from Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou, is set to make a verbal and written representation to the European Commission over the presence of the illegal flag of the Turkish occupation regime on the island and the photograph of former Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in the office of a community employee dealing with relations with the Turkish Cypriots.

    Speaking in Brussels yesterday, Iacovou said the representation would be made because European Commission staff should not only be honest and just but should also show it in their behaviour. Iacovou intends to raise the issue personally during a forthcoming meeting with Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rhen.

    Greece and Cyprus FMs discuss prospects for resumption of Cyprus talks

    Athens, May 24 (CNA) -- The latest developments in the Cyprus question, in the light of the recent deliberations of the Cyprus President's envoy with the UN Secretariat in New York, and prospects for the resumption of Cyprus talks, were discussed during a meeting here today between the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Cyprus, Petros Molyviatis and George Iacovou.

    The close and regular cooperation between the two capitals was reaffirmed during the meeting.

    US warns citizens of risks in property deals in occupied Cyprus

    Nicosia, May 24 (CNA)-- The US State Department has called on its citizens to seek legal advice before buying or selling property in the northern Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus.

    Cyprus has expressed satisfaction that a directive to this effect was posted on the State Department's website and said this was achieved after the coordinated efforts of the Foreign Ministry, overseas Hellenes and American friends of Cyprus.

    Estonian Cyprus Friendship Group at Estonian Parliament to visit Cyprus

    Nicosia, May 24 (CNA) A delegation of the Estonian - Cyprus Friendship Group at the Estonian Parliament, led by its chairman Kullo Arjakas, will visit Cyprus May 25-29, an official press release said here Tuesday.

    During its stay, the delegation will be received by Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias, and will hold separate meetings with Foreign Minister George Iacovou and Chairman of the Estonian - Cyprus Friendship Group, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Nicos Anastasiades.

    The Estonian parliamentarians will also meet Nicosia Mayor Michalakis Zambelas, who is also Estonias Honourary General Consul to Cyprus, Famagusta Mayor Yiannakis Skordis and Lefkara Mayor Sofoklis Sofokleous.

    The delegation will also visit the ceasefire line dividing the free areas from the Turkish occupied north of the island.

    Nicosia, May 24 (CNA) -- House President Demetris Christofias has said that exploitation of Greek Cypriot property, in Turkish occupied Cyprus, by foreigners or others must stop if the new Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat wants Greek Cypriot displaced people not to file law suits against such actions.

    ''This is the message that has to be sent to Mr. Talat. It is in their hands to put an end to these law suits against Turkish Cypriots,'' Christofias said.

    Nicosia, May 24 (CNA) -- The government of the Republic has provided 157 million pounds in aid for the Turkish Cypriots between April 2003 and December 2004, Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has announced.

    He said that part of this amount has been spent by Greek Cypriots who visit Cyprus' Turkish occupied areas, part of it went on medical treatment of Turkish Cypriots, on salaries of Turkish Cypriots working in the government controlled areas, on social security contributions and on fees of Turkish Cypriot students studying at private schools.

    Government to expose illegality in occupied north, says Spokesman

    Nicosia, May 24 (CNA) The government will make every effort to expose the magnitude and the extent of the illegal exploitation of Greek Cypriot properties in Turkish occupied Cyprus, said here Tuesday Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides.

    The spokesman said this would be the response of the government to a letter by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat to the UN concerning law suits by Greek Cypriots against Turkish Cypriots with regard to their properties in the Turkish north.
