    State Department: different US activity for Cyprus

    Washington, Jun 1 (CNA) -- US State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher has said a visit to the areas occupied by Turkish troops since 1974 by three US congressmen does not violate US laws or conventions.

    Responding to questions during his daily briefing, Boucher said last year there has been a different activity on part of the United States as regards the "isolation" of the Turkish Cypriots.

    GUE/NGL ''Study Days'' conference opens in Cyprus

    Limassol, Jun 1 (CNA) -- A European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) ''Study Days'' conference opened here today with the Cyprus question, EU-Turkey relations, the G8, the Middle East and the EU on its agenda.

    Addressing the opening ceremony Cyprus House of Representatives President and left-wing party AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias briefed participants on the current situation regarding the Cyprus question and the reasons that led Greek Cypriots to reject in April 2004 the UN Secretary General's plan for a Cyprus settlement.

    Cabinet decides to extend retirement age

    Nicosia, Jun 1 (CNA) - The Cypriot Council of Ministers adopted a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Finance to extend the retiring ceiling of civil servants to the 63rd year of age.

    Speaking after today's cabinet meeting, Minister of Finance Iacovos Keravnos said the new regulation would come into effect in July 2005 and there would be a gradual transition to the 63rd year of age.

    Cypriot Spokesman says all should respect rules of conduct

    Nicosia, Jun 1 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides pointed out today that everyone should respect the rules of international conduct and reiterated that visits to the areas of Cyprus under Turkish occupation, such as the one by US congressmen, contravene international law and UN Security Council decisions.
