    Brussels, Jun 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus' contribution to the EU's 2005 budget will reach 157 million euros, according to new figures released by the European Commission.

    United Nations, Jun 7 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has recommended a six month extension of the UN Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), until mid December, with the present authorised strength and concept of operations.

    He also says that the time is not ripe for him to appoint a full-time person dedicated to his good offices mission in Cyprus, adding that he intends to dispatch on an ad hoc basis a senior official from the Secretariat to visit Cyprus, Greece and Turkey to assess the situation on the ground in light of recent political developments.

    Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) -- A Cypriot will be participating in the decision and policy-making process of Lions Clubs International, for the period 2006-2008.

    George (Kokos) Nicolaides, past governor and active member of Nicosia Lions and other benevolent organisations, was elected International Director to the 32-member Board of Directors of Lions Clubs International for the period 2006-2008, by the 38th National Congress of Multiple District 117 of Greece and Cyprus.

    Greek Cypriot claims over half million damages from Turkey

    Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) -- A Greek Cypriot refugee, whose case against Turkey is pending before the European Court of Human Rights, has submitted a claim for pecuniary damages and other compensation in excess of half a million Cyprus pounds (about one million US dollars), Achilleas Demetriades, the lawyer handling the case, has told CNA.

    Responding to questions, he explained that the claim was sent to the Court today, in accordance to its recommendation of 6 April in relation to this case, which the Court said it would hear.

    Myra Xenidi Aresti, whose property lies in the fenced area of Famagusta town, occupied by Turkish troops since 1974, is also claiming compensation for moral damages and court costs.

    Cypriot government sees change of direction in Turkey's policy

    Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) -- Cypriot Acting Government Spokesman Marios Karoyan said the government sees contradictions and a change of direction in Turkey's policy on the Cyprus problem, adding that the Turkish side seems to have taken on a defensive stance.

    Commenting on Turkish demands, as they were set out in a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan by Turkey's Permanent Representative to the UN, Karoyan said that until recently Turkish officials and the Turkish Cypriot side were saying that they are interested in the reunification of Cyprus the soonest possible, noting however that ''after the initiatives our side took, which started some months ago and brought concrete results over the past few weeks, there was a change in direction.''

    Cyprus government's initial reaction to UN report

    Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) -- The government of Cyprus appeared satisfied today that UN Secretary General Kofi Annan recommends that the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus must remain at its present level, taking into consideration suggestions to amend the composition of the force.

    Acting Government Spokesman Marios Karoyan, in an initial response to Annan's report to the UN Security Council on the UN operation in Cyprus, said that the report includes provisions that must not by necessity be accepted either by the Greek Cypriot or the Turkish Cypriot side.

    DISY and TKP stress the need for resumption of Cyprus talks

    Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) Right-wing Democratic Rally (DISY) leader Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader of the Communal Liberation Party (TKP) Hussein Angolemli urged today the leaders of the two communities on the island to actively contribute to the resumption of the dialogue on Cyprus leading to reunification of the country and its people.

    Delegations from the two parties met in the government controlled areas of the Republic and exchanged views on the Cyprus problem.

    Greek Cypriot man imprisoned for stabbing Turkish Cypriot boy

    Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) The Assize Court which convened in Limassol today sentenced to 14 years imprisonment a Greek Cypriot for the manslaughter of a 14-year-old Turkish Cypriot boy last year, a police spokesman told CNA.

    Andreas Nicolaou Michael, 30, from Kolossi, Limassol, stabbed on 13 July 2004 to death Salih Mehmet Ozhovarda, son of a Roma family, while the boy was playing with his friends on a dock at the southern town of Limassol.
