    Minister expresses Cyprus' commitment to Lisbon Strategy

    Nicosia, Jul 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus Finance Minister Iacovos Keravnos expressed the the government's commitment to promote the EU Lisbon Strategy, noting that every effort will be made so that Cyprus' National Programme on the Lisbon Strategy is submitted in October 2005.

    Keravnos, who met here today a delegation of the European Commission, comprising representatives of the Economic and Financial Affairs, Employment, Enterprise and Regional Policy Directorate Generals, to discuss the preparation of Cyprus' National Programme on the Lisbon Strategy, said it was important that the programme is functional and provides for concrete actions.

    An official press release said the EU officials assured Keravnos that they will continue to provide every possible assistance for the National Programmes preparation.

    London, Jul 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said his visit to Britain and his talks on Tuesday with British Prime Minister Tony Blair aim at opening a new chapter in the two countries relations and to restore their traditional relations.

    Speaking here this afternoon after being received at the Archbishopric of Thiatiron and Great Britain by Archbishop Gregorios, Papadopoulos said that ''we look forward to a more understanding of our positions and a more just and objective consideration of our pursuits by Britain.

    He said he was optimistic that there is a new climate now, as Britain currently holds the EU rotating presidency.

    Trabzonspor coach: Game with Anorthosis start of friendship

    Nicosia, Jul 27 (CNA)--Turkish Trabzonspor football team coach Senol Gunes expressed today the hope that tomorrow's Champions League game with Cypriot team Anorthosis will be ''the start of a friendship''.

    In a press conference ahead of tomorrow's game with Anorthosis, Gunes appeared cautiously optimistic that his team will qualify to the next round.

    Refugee football club Anorthosis, will take on Trabzonspor for the Champions League second qualifying round. The match will take place at GSP stadium in Nicosia at 20:30 local time. The second leg will be held in Turkey on August 2.

    Cyprus and US sign PSI agreement

    Washington, Jul 25 (CNA) Cyprus and the US signed today the agreement on the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI).

    The agreement was signed during a short ceremony by Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou and US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice at the State Department in Washington.
