    UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs might visit Cyprus

    New York, Sep 21 (CNA) -- Ibrahim Gambari, UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs, might visit Cyprus by the end of October, as part of continuing UN efforts to help launch a fresh initiative on Cyprus, diplomatic sources have said.

    Gambari, who has succeeded Sir Kieran Prendergast to the post, is in charge of the Cyprus dossier by virtue of his post dealing with Political Affairs and according to the same sources he has expressed his intention to visit the island ''once he has mastered the dossier.''

    Cyprus satisfied with EU statement and negotiating framework

    Nicosia, Sep 21 (CNA) -- The Cypriot government has expressed its satisfaction with the agreement achieved in Brussels both on the content of the EU counterstatement to the Turkish unilateral declaration of not recognising the Republic of Cyprus and on the negotiating framework for Turkey.

    Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said the importance of the counterstatement must not be underestimated, noting that the need to issue this statement emerged from the unacceptable declaration of Turkey.

    British High Commissioner says EU statement well balanced

    Nicosia, Sep 21 (CNA) -- British High Commissioner to Cyprus Peter Millett described the EU counterstatement to Turkey's declaration of not recognising the Republic of Cyprus ''well-balanced'', noting that ''it certainly meets the main points which have been raised by the Cyprus delegation while also delivering on the EU strategic objective.''

    Millett said Britain was pleased that the counterstatement has been agreed and the way forward on the negotiating framework is clear, noting at the same time his disappointment by accusations that the British Presidency did not act in an impartial way.

    Cypriot Foreign Minister says EU statement very satisfying

    Larnaca, Sep 21 (CNA) -- Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou has said the EU counterstatement to the Turkish unilateral declaration of not recognising the Republic of Cyprus was very satisfying.

    Iacovou noted that if Turkey does not implement the Ankara Agreement, then ''we will try to convince our partners that some measures are required to convince Turkey to implement the Agreement for Cyprus as well''.

    EU approves counterstatement on Turkey's declaration

    Brussels, Sep 21 (CNA) -- The EU officially approved on Wednesday the counterstatement of its 25 members to the Turkish unilateral declaration of not recognising the Republic of Cyprus.

    The text was agreed on Tuesday after negotiations between the EU British Presidency and Cyprus, and was presented this morning to the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER), where no member state objected to its content.

    The text was then approved in writing and the EU Presidency will circulate is as an EU statement.

    EP Rapporteur on Turkey to visit Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 21 (CNA) -- Dutch Member of the European Parliament, Rapporteur on Turkey's accession to the EU Camiel Eurlings, arrives in Cyprus on Thursday morning.

    During his stay here, Eurlings will hold meetings with the Cyprus government, party leaders and the Turkish Cypriot leadership.

    Enlargement Commissioner says EU statement reasonable

    Brussels, Sep 21 (CNA) -- EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn has said the EU counterstatement to the Turkish declaration of not recognising the Republic of Cyprus was reasonable and balanced.

    In a written statement, Rehn said ''this is a reasonable and balanced outcome,'' noting that ''the agreement between the member states paves the way for a smooth adoption of the negotiating framework and thus the opening of the accession negotiations with Turkey on 3 October.''
