  • [01] PAPADOPOULOS - TALAT - CMP

President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat meet Monday morning for the first time in two years, at the residence of the UN Secretary Generals Special Representative in Cyprus Michael Moller, in the UN-controlled buffer zone, near Nicosia airport.

The meeting takes place on the occasion of the assumption of the offices of the newly appointed third member of the Committee of Missing Persons (CMP), Christophe Girod, who has already had separate meetings with President Papadopoulos and Talat.

According to press information, the tripartite CMP, which also comprises representatives of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities, is due to convene in its new composition, on July 7th.

Exhumations of remains of missing persons are scheduled to continue in August in the Turkish occupied areas as well as in the government controlled part of Cyprus. Remains, to be identified through the DNA process, will be returned to the next of kin.

President of the Committee of Relatives of Missing and Undeclared Prisoners, Nicos Theodosiou, appeared yesterday cautiously optimistic as regards tomorrows meeting.

We have to have hope, this is a meeting which can send a message to the international community that this issue is a humanitarian one and has to be settled, Theodosiou told CNA.

He reiterated that the relatives demand an actual and true investigation into the fate of their beloved ones as ordered by the European Court of Human Rights in its judgment of May 10th, 2001.

    [02] ASEM - INTERFAITH DIALOGUE

Cyprus and Malaysia play host to this years Asia - Europe Meeting (ASEM) Interfaith Dialogue, to take place in the southeastern coastal town of Larnaca from 3 5 July. President Tassos Papadopoulos will officially open the deliberations of the 2nd ASEM, that will deal with the issue of Interfaith understanding and cooperation for a peaceful world.

More than 200 delegates from 40 European and South Asian countries as well as from international organisations will participate in the meeting, including governmental officials, political and religious leaders, academics, intellectuals and representatives of the Press.

The objective of the Larnaca meeting is to identify ways in which people of different faiths of the respective two regions can move from harmony and understanding, through a solid and permanent dialogue, to fruitful and substantial cooperation, rather than mere side-by-side coexistence.
