Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos will be attending a working
dinner with the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN
Security Council on Monday, during which he will brief them on
developments in the Cyprus problem.
President Papadopoulos, who is in New York to address the UN General
Assembly, had a series of meetings on Sunday with UN officials, with
whom he discussed ``the various aspects of the Cyprus problem.``
He refrained from listing the names of the officials he met but pointed
out that he saw ``those dealing with the problem of Cyprus and the UN
Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the development plans and
other political aspects.``
[02] IACOVOU NAM
Former Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou participated in the
Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Havana, Cuba, between 11-17
September, as a special envoy of Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos
who was invited to participate as guest to the summit.
Iacovou told CNA that he held a number of meetings -on the sidelines of
the Summit- with heads of delegations, especially Foreign Ministers of
NAM member states where they discussed the Cyprus problem and other
international issues.
[03] COMMISSION HELIOS
The Commission of Inquiry into the causes of the August 14 2005 Helios
air crash presented letters by the International Civil Aviation
Authority and the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA), stressing that the
Cypriot Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) had weaknesses and
deficiencies prior and after the tragic accident.
Head of the Commission Panagiotis Kallis presented a letter by the JAA
pointing out the lack on the part of the DCA on procedures for airline
certificate renewals and the fact that the DCA`s Aviation Safety
Division had only one full time employee instead of four meant that the
Division had insufficient Safety Oversight Audit (SOA).
[04] PAPADOPOULOS BAGHDATIS
President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos has congratulated Cypriot
tennis player Marcos Baghdatis on winning his first professional title
in his career in the China Open.
Baghdatis beat Croatian Mario Ancic in the Men`s Singles Final with two
sets to one, (6-4 6-0).
